Recently the starter motor has just been clicking and not starting consistently on my Discovery 2 td5.

I bought a repair kit off Ebay for £11-13. Which had a new plunger and contacts. I took the lazy approach. I just replaced the plunger, and cleaned the contacts with a fibre pen, with the starter on the car. The car is starting very nicely again. Time will tell if I need to take the starter off and replace the contacts as well. Given how much of a pain the starter motors can be to get off if you don't have a lift this seem like a time effective solution.

Removing the starter is not a big problem, what gets most stuck is the top nut.

I find taking the bottom bolts outs first, and then using a thin wall socket and a suitable extension on a ratchet to allow you to undo the nut , but to stop the socket getting stuck against the starter motor as you undo the nut, I slide the starter out at the same time.

Cheers
