centrifugal filter housing

Hi People

I need to remove the centrifugal filter housing from my TD5 to helicoil the threads for dome cover. Does anyone know if there is a gasket or O ring behind it. R

o rings behind the housing,a gasket where pipe joins the sump

Decent used on eBay for about £25

Better to fix things though eh?

I'm still dealing with nut and bolting mine

mine may end up like that it looks awkward to remove! I wish I could get hold of the monkey who serviced it last I had to use a two foot knuckle bar to get sump plug out

I screwed long bolts up from the bottom while mines was off araldited them in and use nylon nuts on top to hold cover down and cut threads down so just enough for nylon to grip

The problem is people use the bolts to pull the lid down tight and the threads aren't strong enough for that sort of abuse. It is held on by three bolts, and is only awkward if you have air con, not impossible though.

I think a repaired helicoiled unit would be better/stronger than a used one ready to have the threads pulled out again don't you?

Yes, maybe. More of the thinking that we don't fix much now, just replace.

If people weren't such animals the threads wouldn't get pulled out in the first place

not hard to remove ...you will one day need to remove it for an oil cooler reason .... its only 4 bolts that holds the air con compressor and move this to one side you will see the bigger picture and then realise how easy its to remove the oil spinner

some people forget this is a serviceable item with ally threads and due the course of the thread it doesnt take much to strip due the fact they never got anti seized from factory either

Mines got a nut and bolt arrangement through one of the holes. Non original and sure the bolts been bent to allow space to get the nut on

with out the correct anti seize its normal for alloy threads to pick up very easy
all it takes is some dirt or corrosion for a thread to pick up and strip on removal

A shallow 6mm thread in aluminium for an item designed to be undone frequently is a bit of a cack design though really isn't it, hence why so many have failed.

it funny because i service my own for many years
i only give a slight nip on a short handle using 3/8 drive ratchet
and then i need a 1/2 inch drive to remove the sump plug ?
we have two different types metal reacting to different temps and this relates to distortion
using a knuckle bar on an angle doesnt help also as you loose torque more effort is needed
