I bought an Aldi smart charger last week, took it home and made the mistake of reading the instructions.

They clearly state that the battery should be disconnected from the vehicle before charging. To do this on my L322 would require a degree in ballistic electronics, if I understand my owner's manual correctly.

I assume my charger, price £12.99, is the same or similar to the ones that were sold a few years ago at a slightly higher price.

The charger is still in the boot until I pluck up more courage or get reassurance from someone that it will be safe to just put the clips on to the terminals under the bonnet. Alternatively I have a spare secondary towing socket plug and all the lighter sockets are permanently on. Can I just plug into either of them?

I have 2 smart chargers of different generations from Lidl, as long as you connect to the battery before you plug into the mains there should be no problem, I connect positive first and negative to the engine rather than the battery. I certainly have not had a problem doing that on any of my cars. On the P38's I connect via the trailer socket to save taking the battery cover off.

I was slow in replying because I tried and failed to login on a newer laptop. I hit "Login", the screen darkened as if something was about to happen, but then nothing.
Then I had to go get the Skoda MOT'd. Have I mentioned the local main Skoda dealer here before? MOT'd while I waited, headlight and sidelight bulbs replaced, free freshly made bacon butty and as much free coffee as I could drink, car valeted inside and out. Fifty Two quid.
