The plastic cover that goes around the steering column has two small self tapping screws that go in to underside half of the plastic cover. These screws go in to spring clips located in the metal housing that holds the switches etc. My two spring clips have snapped. The nearest thing I can find is AJ606041 but these are for the binnacle screws and I'm not sure they are the same. Anyone know the right part number for those little clips or alternatives to use? Cheers

I plan on replacing all them spring clips with spire nuts. I have them down to M4 in the rebuild box. If you can wait until Tuesday, I will see if they fit that area as I have just redone the wiring loom onto the new bulkhead and have started on the steering column. I gave up at the point of fitting that lower plastic (just finished night shift and haven’t slept since 1700 yesterday).

Yeah, not in a hurry. Are spire nuts not a similar thing. Just a different name?

From what I can work out, a spire nut is intended for a machine thread, so a metric or imperial “bolt thread”. The spring clips (not sure of its exact name), are intended for self tapping “screws”. I could be wrong though.

That’s an M4 spire nut, and equivalent length M4 bolt. It’s only fitted to one side as I couldn’t find the plastics to mount it properly and show it complete.

I bought M4, M5, M6, and M8 spire nuts from eBay. They aren’t overly expensive, but fit much better than the standard screw spring clips.

Spot on, Mick. I'm off to the Bay right now :) Cheers!

No problem. I don’t know how well they will work with every joint on the dash, but if a spring clip will work, these should work. I will find out for certain later this year.

I just need them for the two under the steering column, that you have shown in your picture.
I've bought a pack of five, stainless steel, M4 spire nuts with bolts included for £2.79

Can you link to the SS spire nuts please? I couldn’t find any.

These are the ones I bought, but it's just for a pack of 5 M4 x 12mm bolts LINKY

When I was doing my rebuild I bought quite a few fastenings from KAY'S LINKY If you message them they'll put together a pack of what you want at a decent price, even if they don't have it on eBay. I have absolutely no association with the company!

I replaced similar fittings with rivnuts great permanent fix and useful anywhere especially blind holes. tidied up grotty rawlplug things that held my light guards too

@mick 1986
Spire nuts arrived mid week
Here's the old snapped ones I've just taken off with new ready to go on

New ones slipped straight in to place

All back together and steering column surround nice and tight again. Cheers, Mick :)

No problem. I tried to build up some of my dash bits the other day, but realised I have no M4 stainless bolts of a suitable head or length. I have ordered some M4 x 20 socket heads. Hopefully they will be ok.
