So, discovered that one lead was actually faulty. Seems somewhere along the line it has parted company from the metal part that clips onto the tip of the spark plug so has simply been jumping from the core to the metal part. This isn't a great scenario so it has likely broken down slowly over time judging by the black mess from arcing.

Anyhoo, today I decided to kill several birds and strip the inlet to get the rocker gaskets changed (stop the leak), move the coil pack, check where the cooling pipes are dripping (LPG vapouriser joints) and see if the LPG pipework needs changing or is it still serviceable?

Anyway, Moved the coils, undid the loom tape to undo the wires to the coils and cut/soldered the white wire which I assume is an earth, taped up and mounted coil packs onto passenger side airbag bracket.

Checked LPG pipes and they look fine. No cracking or chafing.

Can't undo the rocker bolts as they are multi hex and all my sockets are single hex (less chance of slippage & rounding). So tomorrow I'll mostly by buying one solitary socket

Last job will be undoing the cooling pipes, slapping some Tiger Seal onto the metal sleeves that the rubber hoses are joined with and sticking them back together. They drip, which although not dangerous, it is aggravating and messy so I want it dealt with.

Anyway, I looked on here for photo's of a coil pack re-site, but couldn't find it! Any idea's? Was it even on here?

Ta.

Just change the leads. Carbon cored leads have be a problem item since their inception. Treat them as a service item and you won't go far wrong.

200 dollars:eek::eek:

Mine was a lot cheaper, I just ordered leads (no plugs as I'll re-use the old metal parts & caps) from this chap:

Exceedingly nice & helpful

I think I was 20 quid with delivery for 6mtrs of the 8mm silicone outer carbon core leads. I'll simply make them to suit.

The plan is to run the wires through some plastic pipe to shield them from chafing.

If you look at the front left airbag mount, there's a sort of bracket that rises up so the top is above the height of the exhaust manifold, just beside the EAS valve block housing. It should be safe from splashing, but I had an idea to get an old Tupperware box and drill a couple of holes to allow the mounting bolts to go through to the bracket. It's quite secure & high enough to stop any wayward slpashes.

I drilled the holes in the bracket and mounted a riv-nut to screw the bolts onto.

Picture of the "open" loom. The wire partially covering the yellow dip stick thingy is one of the 2 wires to the coils...

One lead quite long, but will replace with a shorter one....

Loom re-taped and wiring in place. Still didn't get a 10mm socket  Forgot!

The "mess" of pipes is just LPG stuff (left) tied up out of the way until I get the rockers off and gaskets changed and EAS bypass (right) with the air valves on an aluminium plate with one way valves (grey) underneath & splitters (black & blue) to go into valve block & down to the airbags. I also have switchable on/off valves in the door pocket so I can remove the block altogether if needs be and still inflate individual corners if the need arises...

Anyway, now it's a waiting game. However, I have to say, hats off to Mr Green Spark Plug Co. I made the call at 3:45, paid at around 3:55 and the email came through that my order has been dispatched via Royal Mail at 4:35 :eek::eek::cool::):) Excellent service :)

Well, me photo's have disappeared!

Anyway, fired her up and still a misfire...so I checked the "short" leads, the ones on the left bank that I hadn't made.

Turns out two were disconnected (the core was apart from the metal clamp inside the plug cap) and one was seriously burned o_O

Still had enough lead left to make two new leads...

So I did, still a misfire

Have a set of Gunson spark plug caps that light up when she's running so checked the right bank, all good. Checked the left bank and one was barely flickering. Swapped it over, same, swapped the wires, still the same, number 4 (nearest the bulkhead on the left bank) was hardly working so I'm guessing it's been so bad for so long it's knackered the coil.

Question is, I only need one coil pack, not a pair (two packs, 4 outlets in each) so is it possible? Do you get just one?

Or... which other vehicles use these coil packs on a 4 or 8 cylinder engine?

Just trying to keep it cheap right now.... Although I'm glad I never spent 115 quid on magnacore leads and found the coil is also dead

Cut old leads, opened metal clips to hold new leads and had awesome fun making them up....

They work proper well and I'm chuffed to bits at saving 100 quid into the bargain. Thinking I could do this as a sideline for all the guys up here who can't get leads very easily and don't want to wait or spend a fortune.

I was lucky to be able to use the old parts, but I think even if i have to order wire, clips, caps and what not, I could still make a few quid on each lead. I mean, it's so simple I could rock up to someones place and make them there & then

So, waited for this guy to contact me on Tuesday... He didn't specify "which" Tuesday though o_O

He got in touch the other day, Tuesday actually! Well, only a week late  He was asking 20 quid for a second hand thing....

However, it turned out the coils he had are the wrong flavour, four coils with two prongs so no use.

Meanwhile I had called the local independent LR parts shop who got me a new coil pack from Britparts for 27 quid.

Fitted it yesterday and all is well again with the ignition system...pity the same can't be said for the LPG system

I disturbed the main feed pipe from the vapouriser to the injectors and soon as she warmed up there was gas pissing out everywhere

So, I'm just off out to fetch a proper fastening clip instead of the cheapo worm clip that was on it. I think next year I'll mostly be replacing all the LPG hoses for safety, although they are in remarkably good condition for all the time they've been fitted, but still... Safety and all that

LPG = mobile bomb if it leaks.

No bombs allowed here

Anyway, new coil fitted... (hidden by leads, but you can see numbers taped to the leads to allow correct fitment)

All four on this bank firing beautifully

No more gas smells. :)

Now, I called a chap who installs these things about 40 miles away and asked advice.

I wanted to know if I could run off a gas bottle and he said "yes but...."

If I am installing a bottle, it has to be upside down and bracketed hard in place. Also, no regulator required so no leaks is a must.

Either that or I have to buy a pump so I can pump from the bottle to the cars tank. No big issue there either, which brings me back to a point I made a long time ago about a tank installed at home (in the garden) which could be utilised to fill the car tank now and then ;)

If you look at fork lift trucks running on gas bottles, the bottles lay on their side.

they arent std gas bottles the are designed so when laid flat in the correct orientation only fluid is transferred from the outlet unlike with std camping uses etc when you take the vapour from the top
