Use a laser level shone onto side to help you keep them level and straight

People have mixed opinions on those stripes but I think some of them actually look pretty good and make the car stand out nicely as an honest 1980s vehicle. Especially if paired with the equally 80s 'turbo' decal on the back corner and a cassette radio on the dash 
Indeed. The 90 in question is my daughter's 1990 early 200tdi which looks as per the photo I included, down to the colour and even the white Rostyles (yes I know there are strong views on those!).
