how does the freelander drive in snow?

As a person that lives in a country with snow for 6 - 8 months in a year I would say they drive brilliantly, but then I drive with studded tyres. But I would think the same would apply with a good set of snow/winter tyres on.
 
Absolutely awesome in snow - I have all terrain tyres on mine, and the FL1 just romped up hills as if it were a normal, dry day - whereas all the 2WD (and German life-style 4WD SUVs) got stuck... :D

I haven't laughed so much driving a car in years! ;)
 
We had a bit of snow last winter but never more than about 6 inches. I only got into trouble once, on my own drive. As it melted, I had a couple of inches of nicely polished ice on the drive and with water running down it you could not even stand on it without drifting downhill. Had to go off road across the lawn!
Apart from that I can confirm that there is no better feeling than pulling a shiny new audi out of a ditch using a 12 year old freelander.
 
It coped brilliantly from Fort Augustus right up to Stronelairg Windfarm at 2500' up. I don't know how the guy in the 6x6 ATD ended up in the ditch, but I had a better Friday than he had. Not the deepest of snow but absolutely sure footed. Fitted with Event All Terrains.

yea it sounds like it copes with snow fairly easily

My daughter lives out in the sticks and i have winter tyres on mine and i must admit it did make me chuckle seeing the look on the drivers face in his new bmw as he skidded all the way down this hill i had just drove down last year

yea i bet thats when those bmw owners wish they hand a 4x4
 
I've driven both the FL1 and FL2 in very snowy road conditions (not off road) and they coped admirably. My preference is for an auto FL2, simply select snow and ice mode and the only things that will stop you are large drifts and 2WD clowns blocking the road. Be very aware that although your traction will be superb, you can still lose it on braking!

PS. Fitted with Goodyear Wranglers.
 
I agree with the braking warning: because everything else feels so “normal”, you can be lulled into a false sense of security and underestimate braking distances.

Just bear this in mind and you’ll be fine :)

Just do a brake test when you first pull away (check it's clear behind you). You don't need to go fast, just 1st gear really. It should help assess how easy the wheels lockup or kick the ABS. While out in the snow you can periodically do this as the conditions change.
 
I agree with everyone else, mine was great in the snow on standard tyres. Better than a couple of local discos but that might be down to their drivers. Get a freelander and you will be looking forward to driving it in the snow. Winter tyres are for poofs and Germans.
