P38A Swollen nuts

As my main P38 is off the road with a ruptured brake pipe, I have been getting my project P38 ready for a 650Km round trip tomorrow. I have come to hate the SS covered wheel nuts, despite replacing most of them, yet another one has swollen to the point where the wheel nut spanned would not fit. The rear tyres are knackered so I wanted to fit the wheels from my scrapper which has reasonably good tyres.
It came off eventually.:mad:
I'll be surprised if the car makes it there and back, it was abandoned for over 2 years and prior to that was used to tow a trailer for the grape harvest, so the furthest it's been in about the last 5 years is about 40Km!:rolleyes:

Anybody know if better wheel nuts are available without the SS covers?

You can pull the covers off but mine are pretty good on the whole. Maybe you're just unlucky? The Disco 2 ones have the same thread and fit but you have to get the right year as some years had smaller heads.

No choice but to either cut the covers off or try to find a socket that will fit. Not much good if you are on the road and have a puncture.

Ye of far too much faith.......road tripping 650 clicks without a full socket set and hammer and the nous to smack the nearest size socket on to effect a repair????
 
Steel wheels here and non swelling steel nuts :D Just got to put up with wammers telling me it looks sh1te ;)
 
My L322 had the same issue, I thought JLR were having me on when they said it... And when they wanted £40 per wheel I knew they were pulling my pants down. Sorted out myself with a bit of force and stubbornness.... And a replacement set off eBay.

The old heap made it there and back with just one EAS fault and as the car had been abandoned for years and has been no further than 50Km's since I got it back on the road, I had a full socket set, other tools, spare battery, jump leads and alternator, 12 volt tyre compressor, 4 schrader valves for the EAS, a full range of fluids, overalls, jacks and Faultmate diagnostics with me. Apart from re-setting the EAS once, nothing was needed. Got to replace a rear height sensor now.
 
While avoiding the obvious slant on the thread's title I have to say that I've experienced the SN situation on my RRC & until now thought I was imagining things when the standard LR supplied nut wrench wouldn't go on the nuts after a few years o_O
I find a 27mm socket is an ever- so- slightly loose fit on a standard SS nut, but can also be used on 'swollen' items if given a light tap to seat it.
nb: assuming P38 nuts are the same size as Classic's ?

If you had seen the state of the car when I acquired it, you would understand why I went prepared. It's nowhere near as well prepared as I want it to be, I have done the swivels & half shaft seals, new SS exhaust, track rod & drag link, airsprings, valve block, dryer & compressor, leak off pipes, #4 injector, duff ignition key barrel, duff boot lock etc, but there is much more work needed.
