The main earth wire from the battery goes to the gearbox not the chassis. An earth runs from chassis to engine by the near side engine mount mount. It is a good idea to have an extra body to chassis connection.
From the battery it goes to my body then from the chassis to the trans! Not sure what the earth from the main terminal to the plate on top of the battery is for though because that’s where it seems to be earthing through

depends some have the main earth attache to chassis then trans with the same lead

probably an attempt at improving the poor earths, a cable can look ok but have very high resistance and so make poor earths

Well that is wrong, main earth needs to go to a gearbox bolt because that is the shortest way the starter motor can earth when motor is cranking. No idea what those other wires are just not standard. Large current flowing all around the houses is not good.

What worries me is the two red wires hiding under the scorched earth wire with the bare eye connector, do you have a multi meter to check if these are live as if so the would be shorting out to earth adjacent to the battery holding bracket post and as the weakest link to battery earth terminal is the scorched cable that would then get red hot and melt as it has done
