Disco 1 300tdi Fuelling Issues

Hi all, brand new here.
I'm a little stuck. Recently got myself a leggy 300tdi disco (210k) but a fairly sound one rot wise. Ran beautifully around the yard whilst I was prepping it for the MOT that it scraped by.
I've now driven it home - and since doing so it's had some fuel starvation issues.
New filter and a bleed and it seemed better but the bleed plug didn't seem to produce enough diesel when open, so I bought a Britpart OEM lift pump and fitted it. Primed beautifully and started and revved no problem.
Here's the new issue - at idle, it sits around 1300rpm and when the key is removed the engine continues to run for about 15 seconds.
Pulling the cable from the stop solenoid makes no difference. Any ideas?!
 
New stop solenoid .. ;)

If yours still has the tamperproof stuff around it then brute force either works wonders or screws it completely, so be careful destroying the tamperproof bits. The stop solenoid itself, underneath the crap, is the same as the 200 Tdi etc, so a standard part.

Cheers Paul. I had a feeling it might be that so I've ordered one. Would that cause a high idle though?
 
Doubt it, but start with what you know and take it from there. Lots of things could be at fault, but another place I'd look is in the boot! Lift the carpets, and unscrew and open the fuel tank hatch. The top of the fuel tank has three fuel pipes going into it, but where they fit into the top is nylon and eventually gets old and dis-coloured and cracks. Even if it's only discoloured I'd change it out 'cos it'll crack soon ...

It's a fault that can take ages to find 'cos you normally work backwards.

There's also the sedimenter to check out, again, if you try to undo the drain valve it'll normally break, so just undo the centre bolt/nut and check it isn't blocked or has the infamous 'diesel jelly' problems .. ;)

Then there's the filler cap breather hole, can create a partial vacuum in the fuel tank and starve fuel supply, which gets it running lean, so agaiun can make it run 'differently to normal. .. ;)

Sedimenter is done, nothing of note. Lines between sedimenter and lifter are clear. Sender unit might be worth a shout though
 
I went through this pain staking process a few years back, ended up being some pitted/pin holes in the fuel line. Rana complete new line from sender to lift pump and ran like a dream.
 
The over run will be the stop solenoid I'm sure. If it's not protected, for the fiver of whatever they cost, just get that bit done.
 
Strangely, took the truck round the block this morning and shuts off fine - still idles at 1300rpm though, and it's constant - not hunting or chugging!
 
Now don't I feel like a class k**bhead! Opened the bonnet this evening and immediately noticed that the plastic clip for the throttle cable was dangling freely in the wind like my brain! :cool:
Clipped it back on and the truck is as good as new. Pulls like a train with the new lift pump! Thanks for your help and understanding of my total lack of common sense...

Step one when looking for an engine problem...........open the bonnet!
Step two..........open eyes!
