300 tdi stalling

It very much does sound like the stop solenoid if it runs spot on and then suddenly cuts out, and also has trouble shutting off when the key is out - I would check the wiring to the solenoid (or suggest this to your mechanic at the end of the week), good chance that might be it - normally a shagged pump is accompanied by all sorts of poor running characteristics so would put that on the back burner for now

you can always take the plunger out of it - sure, you will have to stall it every time to stop it, but for a short test period, it would give you some answers.

Hi everyone, firstly sorry I didn't reply to the two posts on this second page, only just found the page. A week ago, having run a new fuel injection pump for a few days ok I was about to come on and say problem solved, but then she broke down 3 times in one day. Same breakdown. So my mechanic out a wire from the battery to,I beleive, the solenoid, with a switch between and told me to use it before ignition the next time I broke down. Broke down next day, used the switch, still no go. This i understand would discount an electrical problem (would it?) Anyway next everyone (several mechanics and my parts supplier) told me it would be my lift pump. Replaced it today, broke down after 4 minutes. It's definitely getting more frequent, takes less time from start to happen. Getting pretty desperate as it's been going on ages now and I need my car! Two things, firstly I imagine that there is a fuelly smell about a minute before she breaks down. Second i imagine there is a misfiring sound. I say imagine because I'm be been asked about misfiring previously and hadn't noticed it before. The smell i am more sure about but not 100%. I'm hoping that elimination of the fuel injection pump and the lift pump will point to something else! I will very much appreciate your suggestions for the most likely culprit. Thanks.
