Hi I have a defender 300tdi 90 which has the death wobble at 50mph. I need some help please. Last night I drove slowly up a kerb to fit through a tight space and the death wobble disappeared for about 5 miles before returning. I have noticed just before it starts the steering appears to become light. I am getting married in the next couple of weeks and I am hoping to you the landrover. Any ideas would be greatfully received.

Kind regards

As above. Also worth getting your wheel balance checked. Then you're in to checking steering joints and play in pivot bearings.

If there's a steering damper fitted, it might be brokened .. replacement or removal is the only option.

However, removal means the rest of the steering system needs to be spot on. I've run my 90 without for a while but added a damper when I also added HD steering rods and other stuff that can adversely affect steering.

So, also check, as said above, the panhard rod bushes, they usually feel good when trying to move with a hand, but use a crowbar or long pry bar to lever them. Almost any movement they need replaceing. Similarly the front suspension bushes, trackrod ends, radius arms and all joints. At the rear I'd also check the suspension and trailing arm bushes, as well as the A-frame bushes.

'course, your steering box might also be a tad loose, or something wrong with tyre pressures/sizes/worn treads, there's a host of things that might influence steering wobble so it's worth checking 'everything' .. though I'd do them one at a time, fix it, then start again with a decent test drive and carry on till it goes completely.

It's jolted something back into place, hence why I thought steering damper immediately, but then thought about the other stuff too.

Hi there,
It would interesting to hear if you found out what the problem was? I'm experiencing the same issue with my 300tdi 110. I've replaced the steering damper and checked all the joints which seem ok. I'm suspecting panhard rod bushes so replacing them next week with poly bushes.

Steering drop arm ball joint? Any play?

I had the wobble unless I went around a left hand curve.....that was panhard rod bushes. The left curve must have moved the rod against a good bit of bushing so no wobble!

It'd be nice if the OP replied saying how it's going ...
