I get up at 6am most mornings to take my daughter to work. We usually go in the Skoda, but on special days take the RR (2004, diesel).
For about the last month we have heard a sort of occasional muted double bleep, quieter and quite distinct from the parking sensor noise or usual Ping! The bleeps seem to occur at the same 3 or 4 places on the road, often just before traffic lights, although this could be coincidence.
The first few times we thought it might be daughter's mobile phone in her bag or mine in my pocket, but yesterday after dropping her, I went on somewhere where my phone fell out of my pocket and down the side of a chair, so I drove home with no phone and no daughter. The bleeps still happened.

The posh dashcam is in the other car, the RR makes do with a cheap basic one which has no GPS and doesn't make any noises. I have a standby portable satnav for emergency, but it has a flat battery and is switched off. The RR satnav started throwing out its CD, so the CD drive is still there with no CD in. The radio is off.
I have had the RR just on a year now and have still not got round to sorting out the illumination for the dashboard and ribbon display, so I have to shine a torch on the display to see any fault messages. This is not easy to do on the move.

The bleeps sound as if they are coming from inside or under something. I have emptied the boot and all pockets. The glove box lid is still in the boot, so there is nothing in that storage space.

Any ideas where it might be coming from?

No progress on sorting the bleeps, but in investigating whether there was anything in the pocket behind the drivers seat, I discovered that some document was crunched up deep down and just round the corner at the bottom. In reaching down, against the very strong elastic, there was a bang and the whole back of the seat came away. It has taken me about 40 minutes this afternoon to get it back into place.

Probably everyone knows this but the key seemed to be to get the side away from the fold down arm rest clipped in, then pull the armrest back beyond its normal out of the way position, This lets you lift the seat back just enough to get the second top clip into its proper place.

At least I've learnt something. I couldn't get the document out, so no exciting scandal about the previous owner.

Nope....if the key battery is low, a message pops up on the dash.

The two beeps are very faint and quick

Ah i see, thks buddy , can understand how frustrating that could be

Have read on some of the D3/D4 forums of where cob webs etc can cause the parking sensors to throw a tantrum and output a slight noise ???

Also assume a diagnostics won’t show it up either

I still only have the under a tenner el-cheapo BMW-Scan diagnostics, which I have just run. It shows a lot of old codes, which all cleared OK. Some of these will return when I go for a run later, but I've been ordered to stop running the engine outside the open windows of the house. Today's pre-clearing log is below.

The glow plug error has always been there, as has the dimmer pot for the dash lighting. There have been alarms caused by a big moth in the RR one night, and I did drive with the rear window open recently, so I can rule out the alarms. The A/C doesn't work and I'm not sure about the ABS or some of the other codes.

Snap. Mine is intermittent and I have now put it down to her chirping at me because for once she's happy :D

Hiya

Just read this ???

On the audio, tv/nav screen choose menu, choose system settings, then memo. turn this off.

short description:
1. Memo
Shortly before the hour, three signal tones
will be emitted. If you have switched on this
function, you will see a soundwave symbol
at the bottom edge of the display screen,
after the day.

I would love to......... but my display doesn't work :D

P.s Also if my beeps were linked to that it would happen hourly. It doesnt. Some drives it does it, some it doesnt. It doesnt bother me, as It does it rarely. So it can live :)

Every time I think about having my dash taken apart and paying over £500 to have the guys have a look at it, something else comes up that is more important and more expensive . The sound system still works, so there is little reason to pull it apart , with the inherent risks of rattles and not fitting quite right , that occur when you take a vehicle apart . I still havent found the rattle from when it was taken apart 2yrs ago and put back together by the stealers. One rattle is enough :(

Oh blimey , don’t blame u then if it means the dashboard coming apart

Had my entire dashboard out when I replaced a heat exchanger on my old hippo and that dash rattled regardless of how much care I took , sometimes wonder where the metal clips that are atttched to the panels wear out and become weak so don’t snap in properly like they useto

Must admit the D3 is a lot better :)

I was going to run diagnostics again tonight, but no time now as daughter rang for a lift home on the same bleeping route.

On the way there, through Birkenhead, there's a Shell station on one side of the road and a car breakers the other. On just this section of road, as previously observed on about 3 separate occasions, there were two instances of muted double bleeps. They seem to come from somewhere in the back part of the car. On the return journey, the bleeps didn't happen.

Daughter's conspiracy theory revolves around her knowing of 2 separate people who have pulled into the petrol station and then been unable to restart the engine. The breakers sold new batteries to both of them.

I think I prefer Gold Rover's Rangie's happy bleep theory to that.

Doubt it’s any use, on my D3 the rear parking sensor speaker is in the back and read if the bumper sensors get cobwebs or pushed in, cracked etc it can sometimes set them off ??

Alas is more than likely useless info but thought of mentioning it in the 1% off chance , lol

Wasv the inability to restart have anything to do with the batteries? A short walk across the road and a word with Jimmy or his son I'm sure they would have sorted things out. I've known Jimmy for years from when I was in the business a real gent.

AIUI that was what they did, and it was the battery in both cases. One was the daughter's husband and the replacement (new) battery did the trick.

I wasn't really accusing the car breakers of operating a death ray, except in jest. I actually bought a mini wheel for a small trailer from that breakers last week. As always, they were very helpful.

My muted double bleep does seem to happen on that stretch of road and is definitely not the same as either the front or rear parking sensor (ref our friendly D3 driver) alarm. The spiders here all seem to set up home in the wing mirrors, anyway.

It looks as if I'll just have to revert to worrying about when the gearbox is going to fail.
