After having 2 new wheel bearings and 2 new drive flanges and a new maf sensor and diff oils changed....ive now been told my 110 td5 has "bits of metal in transfer box oil"

More dusty than large fragments. I fear my already emptying wallet could nt stretch to a new transfer box as yet.

Will more regular oil changes assist the lifespan? Or indeed using heavier oil?.

Gear changes seem fine, no resistance or loud whines yet, no clunks at present. Hopefully it may have some life yet?????

Any assistance or advice greatly appreciated.

Cheers

+1 to all. My refurb'ed Ashcroft box had a few bits of metallic crud on the drain plug after 1500 miles, which I reckon is the usual build debris. Unless everything meshes perfectly (unlikely), a "new" box is going to generate a little metallic debris as it beds in.

I blame the sunshine myself. The bright light discloses all kinds of sparkly, glittery things in gear oil. Unless it is excessively noisy or gear changes are poor I wouldn't worry about it. Even if you can find big lumps of metal it is not necessarily fatal. Many years ago we had a Series 2 forward control with a great big spherical ENV diff on the rear axle. On changing the oil one day - possibly for the first time in the vehicle's life - we found some big bits of metal that looked to me like the faces of gear teeth. On taking the diff apart we discovered that the bolts holding the crown wheel onto the diff mechanism were loose and one had come out so far it was grinding its head away on the casing. A few minutes with Loc-tite and a torque wrench and all was well.
