Hello
I bought my Freelanderabout half year ago and now I have been driving it about 30 000 km. Cooling water has come out from expansion tank two times during that time. Water pump has been changed about 40 000 km before and I have changed the thermostat about 25 000 km before. When A/C is on, both cooling fans are running in low speed and temperature is lowering to 100C. By using "Delphi Cars" software I can turn both fans on and they are running in high speed.

But ... Starting from cold motor and when Engine Cooling Temperature sensor is going to up to 106 C both cooling fans are not starting/running at all. In same time radiator temperature near inlet tube is going up to 112 C (measured by infrared thermometer) and right side of radiator is about 80 C.
When I put A/C on, then fans are running and lowering temperture to 90 C - 95 C.
Question
Any idea why cooling fans are not running, even if ECT is showing 106C, there are not any trouble codes etc.

Car is 2002, 2.5 l, V6 with Jatco

This is from the manual.

So reading though that. It looks like the thermostat monitoring sensor could be faulty.

Does your Freelander have a temperature sensor at the bottom of the radiator hose? I had this problem too in my V6 2006, to fix I left that sensor disconnected from the bottom hose.
I do not know if all versions of v6 have this sensor.

No, I don't have it - I have seen it in some service manuals but my Freelander don't have it. When I got some free time, I will disconnect temperture sensor, then fans should run in maximum speed -> if not, then something wrong with ECU.
Also I like to simulate temperature sensor example with potentiometer but lets see, if I find suitable one.

New ECT - actually two, one OEM and one original - compared with old one. No significant differencies found and new one installed. Fan's are not running as manual say's:
The thermostat monitoring sensor, for engine cooling. The fans come on at minimum speed if the coolant temperature goes above 90°C (194°F), and progressively increase to maximum speed at a coolant temperature of 102°C (216°F) - this is not happening
More or less they are running as Motor Protection mode says
As part of the power down routine, when the ignition is switched off, if the ambient air temperature is more than 15°C (59°F) the ECM samples the coolant temperature using the input from the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor. If the coolant temperature is more than 106°C (223°F), the ECM signals for the cooling fans to come on. The speed of the cooling fans is in proportion to the coolant temperature, from minimum speed at >106°C (>223°F) to maximum speed at 115°C (239°F). The cooling fans are switched off after 5 minutes or when the coolant temperature decreases to 106°C (223°F), whichever occurs first.
This is happening when motor is running

If heater matrix blower motor is on, then temperature is going down ex. from 115 C to 106 very quickly - actually it's cooling much better that radiator with two big fan's :)
On other hand radiator feels to be okay, water is passing well by garden hose and radiator seems to be clean.

Temperature of left up corner is example 80 C, middle about 40 and right corner can be 20 but how I can know if there is really enough flow? Any idea about simple flow indicator?

Found a cracked T-piece in upper radiator hose, when temperature was high, there was a mall leakage. T-piece changed and also I put new coolant, now there is about 55% coolant and 45% water -> now no bubbling coming to expansion tank.

Are your fans running properly now? I have the same behaviour with my cooling fans as you describe.

Actually problem was a wrong type thermostat. There is same kind of thermostat in Rover but it`s a pure thermostat and KV6 has a PRT type (Pressure Relief Thermostat). Final result was that Water was not reaching cooling radiator, only the heating matrix. They are looking similar but funtion is not same :(

At least it's sorted. However all KV6 thermostats are of the PRT type. I suspect that your thermostat had just failed, so didn't open. A PRT thermostat will still pass coolant to the rad, if the engine goes over 3000 Rpm ,give or take a few 100 Rpms.
;)
