I wonder how often you have changed the ATF in all those years?
For the past 10 years, around every year, or 10,000 miles. Prior to that, I trusted garages to rip me off until I lost patience with them, signed up here, and started doing everything myself.

First ATF change I did around 2008 looked like chocolate milkshake (I have a pic somewhere!), but since then they've been reasonable due to low mileage since it's not my daily driver any more. Pic I posted yesterday was the first time in 10 years I've changed the fluid and instantly thought it doesn't look right.

Car was driven by a relative for a bit last year, but covered less than 5,000 miles.

Edit: My mistake, found pictures from some years ago - was the front diff oil which looked like chocolate milkshake first time I started servicing myself, not the ATF.

The HP24 is from the 4.6V8, you need to fit your existing bell housing and maybe the oil pump. Otherwise it's a straight swap and is a good bit stronger...

Are there any ECU / BECM gotcha's to watch out for, or is it literally a matter of finding a decent box to swap?

On a side-note, I painted the outside of the sump with POR15 5 or 6 years ago - pretty pleased with how that's held up, as the acoustic cover hasn't been in place all that time (although probably only covered 20,000 miles)

There are no electronic considerations, functionally the HP24 is identical to the HP22, it just has stronger internals.
Just need to find a low mileage box at a good price.

Just a thought, have you tried setting off in 2 or 3 on the selector............ Just to rule out sprag clutch.
If it drives in 2 but not D, it's probably the sprag

I was just weighing up my options:
  1. Replace with a refurb box
  2. Replace with a second hand box
  3. Refurb existing box
What's the difference between the 22 and 24? I seem to recall the bell housing is shorter, or something needs changed to fit?

At the moment, I think my preference is to get a second hand box in, so I can get my own box up on the bench and replace the friction rings at my leisure. I'd be happier getting my old box back in at some point, as I know its entire 19 year history, and friction rings giving up at 175,000 miles is the first issue it's ever had.
improved clutch A and C and D strengthened epicyclic hubs
