Hello,

I am a novice with car issues and need someone to help point me in the right direction. My Landrover free lander 2 has a few issues that might be related but not sure what the cause could be.

When I start my car I am getting white smoke on start up only and juddering, idling mostly noticeable prior to driving for a while then settles down and only slightly idles.

There is also oil making its way into the airflow pipe and leaking out where circled in the image below.

I opened the cap in the image below and noticed it had oil and also no filter if one should be there? just a rubber inside cap and spring.

So these are the questions I have as I don't want to take it to a garage and get ripped off with out checking out the smaller issues that could be a root cause.
  1. Is this related to needing a oil change
  2. An oil filter change
  3. Could this be the cause of the juddering and white smoke

Any help you fantastic people can give me would be very much appreciated!!

Thanks
Sam

There's always going to be a bit of oil in the induction system. This can creap out of any tiny leak in the induction system. If it's due an oil and filter change, then get it done.

Thanks Nodge68 but I don't know if it is due yet however I will be getting this done shortly as I don't think the amount that is leaking out is right. I am just wondering if there is underlying issue or if the cap should have a filter can't find any information on google.

How much oil is leaking? All turbo diesel engine put a bit of oil onto the intake system. Oil, being a creeping fluid, will find it's way through pipes joints and O rings of sensors, even if they look perfectly sealed. It's of no real concern, as long as there's only small quantities of said oil and the leaks are of oil only with no air content.

Large quantities from a failed turbo seal for example can actually run the engine on its own without any fuel, but you'd definitely know if that were to happen.

The smoke at start up is likely what td4van said.

If it wants a service it should say on the dash. But that's only time (or maxed out miles) since the dash service light was reset. Yer never know if the service was really done.

No filter on a 2.2 Freelander 2 in the pcv system.

First port of call for me would be to check glow plugs
Yeah will enquire with the garage today as I did think this could be the issue as sometimes after starting I have to put the car into drive or switch through the gears for the engine light to go off and radio to come on. I have changed the batterie in the past as I read this could be an issue.

@Nodge68, Enough to leak down the side of the engine and leave stains on the drive way. Its not a massive leak and possible over time its the built up and I am only noticing as its got to the stage of leaving marks on the floor as wondering if its the jubilee clip and I should get double wire spring clamp.

My FL2 does the same thing, much worse when the weather is cold.

As it was still in warranty and only 29000 miles I took it to the dealer. They could not find a problem, (don't know how hard they looked) I changed the air filter and fuel filter and it has been better, I suspect the fuel filter is not related to the problem but the air filterprobably helped.
They are not expensive and easy to fit, fuel filter needs to be bled when it is changed but it's no big deal.

hi ,be careful of excessive oil leaking from that pipe it drips onto the exhaust and smokes badly
I.thought mine was on fire it smoked that bad ,I just just clean it regularly .but I dont know why it does it.

Update: I have changed the oil, oil filter (not hard at all) , air filter and cabin filter & cleaned the under panel of the engine mound. Still have a slight idle but seems to go in a quicker time than before. There is so much old oil down the inside of the engine I could not clean it all but have noticed that the air flow is not leaking since. I hope this is the case as it is early days.

Next step is to get the glow plugs changed.
