Hi guys
Looking into buying a refurbed / galv bulkhead for my 1970 2a, can't have mine refurbed as we've been told its too far gone hence why i'm asking

I used classic bulkheads to refub one I bought off ebay for my sereis III ad thought they were very good.
They occasionally have some in stock and talking to them nothing is too far gone. When I took mine down they had a series 2 bulkhead that the owener was insistent was rebuilt because it was the original one. After the acid dip the only bit they used was the a piece in the center above the gearbox tunnel, and the bonnet gutter. Everything else was new metal!

I have had bits from classic bulkheads but not a full bulkhead.

same day despatch if they had it in stock, should imagine there would be a lead time for a new bulkhead.

also used to be a chap around andover who made them iirc used to see his stuff on ebay. can't seem to find his site so I guess he is no longer around

I contacted them last week to see if they could refurb a defender one, if I can find one at a sensible price, and the lead time for that was 12 weeks, which is a lot quicker than it was when I Iast used them.

Son rang a few places up yesterday whilst I was at work and out of the 4 places he rang only one answered the phone ( Ashtree ) and they said they can turn one round for us in two weeks, it will just be a recon'd bulkhead and not galved as it would be to expensive even with money knocked off for our old bulkhead so we have decided to go with these so hopefully I will have a bulkhead soon :D

I think you would be crazy to go to the effort of swapping a bulkhead without having it galvanised. I know series are simpler than defender swaps, but even still...

You could always get it galvanised yourself as it is not that expensive. I have over time glavanised nearly everything on both of mine. My local place (Arkinstall galvanising, Birmingham) has a minimum charge which I think was £75 for up to 100kg and then anything over is charge by weight. I agree with @julianf if you are going to all that effort you really want it galvansied as well.

Took 8 months for a galv bulkhead from ashtree & it was still wrong when I collected this. Asked for some special works to be done,

To galv a bulkhead does not cost much probably £150 on a 3 day turn around company in Bridgwater does the galv

I would be inlcided to get it to fit then decide on galving, just in case it needs to adjustment. I see the get the benfit of galv, and you really see it on how long new cars are lasting, but a bulkhead with waxoil will do 40 years or so. My LWB is 1970 and its till on its original chassis and bulkhead. The bulkhead does need some minor welding and its had both footwells replaced, but that's after 48 years

Yeah thats something else to think about as regards making sure it fits before deciding to have it galv or not, don't get me wrong i wanted a galv bulkhead but with hearing a few stories over the last 12 months or so of in some cases of galv bulkheads going rusty it started to put me off so getting it un-galved, test fitting it then get it galved locally mite be a better way to go as i've found a galv place close ish to me :)

Sorry me and son got our wires crossed, the bulkhead will be galvanised as this is how their bulkheads are done once refurbished and will be collecting it along with our old bulkhead to hand over as part exchange in 3 weeks not 2 weeks as I said before.

I'm not to tythered if its a little late to be honest as i've got the gearbox to send away anyway so it is what it is :)
Although this wasn't ashtree there is "a little late" and there is waiting nearly 9 months . That was one of the chaps I know and it was for a refub on his rather than a replacement, put the whole build on hold for a while, he was not happy.
