Good morning all,
I've been a member of the RR forum for many years. Bought a '84 B reg 90 about 18 months ago from a friend but hardly used it. It's in the garage so no pictures to show at the moment.

Was originally a hard top in green, 2.5 petrol. It's had many changes over the years. Now a 3.9 V8 auto with disco 1 axles. Needs a bit of tidying but very sound, new LR chassis in 2001.
I have a disco 1 200 Tdi engine and was thinking of swapping it for the V8..
What's peoples opinions?
Thank you

Found a picture of it when my friend had it. I've fitted a standard black grill and light surrounds.

A lot depends on what you want it for, everyday work/drive Tdi for economy but for anything else stick with the V8.You can't beat the sound and feel of an 8 hauling you along.

Fuel economy is not great with the V8 if you plan on doing high mileage.
I had a Rover SD1 with the same engine and l swear you could see birds falling out of trees in the rear view mirror.

Should have left the old grill and light surrounds looks like a stage 1 with those on!
if you plan on using it as a daily drive and do more than about 5k a year, I would swap to the tdi unless you can afford the fuel bill. The v8 is a nice engine but it is very heavy on fuel compared to a tdi. and depsite what peolpe say a standard tune tdi is not lacking in power or speed.
another thing to consider is if the new chassis was glavanised i do not think the v8 and tdi engine mounting positions are the same (although someone with more knowledge will be bale to confirm) and therefore to swap you will have to move them compromising the galv. If it was not galvanised this is not as big a problem.

You don't say why you are thinking of swapping to the 200Tdi, so it's difficult to offer an opinion on such vague notion.
If it's for fuel economy because of the miles you will be doing, then it's a foregone conclusion.
If it's not for the economy/mileage and just because you have a 200Tdi lying around, then I'd leave it as is.
I'm presuming you have already weighed this up, but just in case, as well as the engine mount positions I'd be investigating if it alters the gearbox position/drive train and the changes needed to the exhaust system.
As dag019 said the power issue is debatable. I agree a standard 200Tdi is ok, so long as it's pushing out the 107hp it came out of the factory with. The issue might be dropping down from the 3.9 V8 to that, you might feel you would be better off with pedals. Everything is relative!
For me, if it was a weekend or recreational (got it for fun) vehicle, I'd keep the V8 without a doubt.
At the end of the day people's opinions are no real use, it all boils down to what you are dong with it, what you want from it and what you can afford. Sounds like you've got a decent Landy though!

I'm biased, V8 90 any time, unless the fuel cost is an issue.
Should have left the old grill and light surrounds looks like a stage 1 with those on!
Yes, Stage 1 grille and surrounds are ace IMO; if you've still got them and don't want them I'd agree a reasonable price

Thank you for your replies. Should have said why I'm considering the change. By the way I've sold the stage 1 grill.
The V8 engine is out of my RRC. My Classic is an ex factory car, reg ends ''UDU'. Been told it's worth more if it has the original engine, although no intention of selling it at the moment, wondering whether to keep the engine, which means taking it out of the 90 and finding another V8 or using the Tdi I already have. I'm actually a bit put off by the amount of work and if the extra value on the classic is only £500-£1,000 it aint worth it.
Would the 90 be more desirable and valued more with a V8 or Tdi? With all the bad press about diesels there seems to be interest in v8's.

Thanks

I would have thought that the 90 value would be the same with either engine. However with the tai it would be more desirable to more people so would be easier to sell. Obviously the RRC will be worth more with the original engine if it is a specific model but again matching numbers cars only Appeal to a small minority and most people would only be interested in if it had an engine that ran.
