Can you replace the downpipe studs?

My manifold has really rusty downpipe studs. Is it a write-off, or are they replaceable - and if so, how?

Yes

with a bit of difficulty ...

Good soak with Plus-gas, GT85 or some such, wire brush the studs/nuts/ re-GT85, then run the engine up to get it hot...

Then with a mixture of extensions and a ratchet or such, from underneath, gently TIGHTEN the nuts until they just barely move, then more GT85 and undo them - the tightening helps break the corrosive bond. keep them soaked in stuff or oil them and they'll come off a treat... lock two nuts together and they'll take the studs out ...

New nuts and studs and Robert is your Mums new friend ...

Much appreciated. Much oil and two nuts it is. The vehicle's not a runner at the mo, so it might be a propane torch rather than running the engine - but good to know that there's nothing magic about them and they should be replaceable like any other studs.

If they snap and they still might, it's easier to take the manifold off to get the end out, because of the angle of the dangle ...

I replaced my 200 ones with stainless steel studs and nuts, had them off 2 or 3 times in the last few years with no probs.

As it happens, I've just bought a replacement manifold gasket as I need to change the inlet manifold, so I'm expecting to remove in any case. I'll see what studs I can source.
