No Horn

Hello Gang.
Freelander 2002 td4 late.
Poor thing lost it horn checked the fuse and no problem pressed like mad but no toot. So I guess my horn given up the ghost. I ve found a list of part numbers off Rimmer Bros just need a pointer.

Is it easy enough to replace as it looks so from my end or do I need to wear a condom and KY Jelly.

There’s a bit more to it than just a fuse. Before you spend your money, have a ferret around with a multimeter or test light:

If the horns sound when trying to lock the car with a door open, then that proves the horn circuit up to the relay coil. So that leaves the the horn switches on the wheel or the rotary coupler (clock spring).

Ah I fear that might be the issue. As my skills only stretch so far, this sound more of a garage job in light of airbags and steering wheel removal plus the cost of the rotary coupler.

It's actually not that difficult a job. Disconnecting the battery for 30 minutes before starting the job will render the airbag safe.;) The steering wheel is held on with a single large nut, so is easy to remove.

You'll need to find a working second hand coupler as they've been unavailable new for some years now.

Much that you have faith in my skills to tackle this, I am still a member of Gerry Cackhanders until I have the nob removed from my head.:oops: But still thanks for the info. Are you sure about these couplings as I note from Rimmers Bros still sell the expensive and aftermarketo_O

1. Disconnect battery for a little while.
2. Undo two torx screws at the back of the steering wheel.
3. Lift away airbag unit and unplug its connector.
4. Unscrew and unplug rotary coupler.

Go onto www.1stchoice.co.uk (scrapyard search) and put in your details, including request for rotary coupler.

Await quotes for rotary coupler.

I have a working one somewhere you can have - I’ll let you know if I find it. But seriously, my granny could change one over. We’ve got faith in you ;)

Aye if you got one much appreciate that. Would you like some beer chits as long as it working.
 
The only thing to watch for is making sure the steering is centred before starting and coupler is centred properly before fitting it's really simple then.

Well a bit of luck while doing a search looking for different retailer who kept saying no longer available Steve Parker was on the next search page. It about 81.40 pound though but new. I hope to get it in the post soon let you know. But worth dropping a line or two. another search has a french landrover supplier also selling I think the same. On Ebay there is a seller but only one that selling a few which I WOULD QUERY.
 
Just curious on a side note. In light of the scarcity of these parts which LR seems determine to annoy us Freelanders 1 drivers. Is there alternative modification that shouldn't fall foul of MOT requirements. Seems a simple solution to link horns via relay and fuse to switch without interfering the alarm setup.
 
I use the spare cruise control lines in the coupler, that are still working on mine. It seems that only certain lines in the coupler break, so if your vehicle doesn’t have CC you could borrow one of those lines as they are doing nothing.

I think from memory there are 6 lines in the coupler in total.

As others have said. Brand new ones are as rare as hens teeth. Even trying to get hold of the equivalent rover part.
