hi have found a freelander 1 for sale here in France with key stuck in steering lock just to get a price I contacted local dealer the part was nearly a 1000€ plus 400€ to fit, any one know best place to get one, think I should be able to get a lock with key for around 200 pounds, anyone changed lock and where there any problems?

What are the symptoms related to a bad ignition lock cylinder?
When the ignition switch lock cylinder fails, the ignition switch may very well work, but it may be difficult to find out, as the lock cylinder can fail to release when the key is inserted. This creates a situation where the ignition cannot be turned, or takes much wiggling and shaking before it finally turns. If that is not the problem, perhaps the ignition will turn no matter what, runs with the key removed, and allows the key to be removed in any position. In this situation, the vehicle is much easier to repair, since the lock cylinder can be removed without removing the steering column. Lastly, the lock can fail to release your key, or not allow the key to travel all the way into the ignition lock cylinder. In these frustrating scenarios, the repair may be a little easier as well, since lubrication usually releases the lock cylinder.

Have not been to see car but plan to go weekend, the guy says the key will not come out but will turn to start and stop car, might just need a bit of wd40 but think I will need to change it

because it has the flob to open it

That's fine until to fob stops working, locking you out of the vehicle. Get a full lock set which includes the ignition lock, driver's door lock and boot handle lock. None of them are difficult to fit, but you MUST get the locks for the correct year of vehicle as they changed the design in 2000.

thanks I thought i would just keep the key for the doors on the same ring, I have had many cars in the past with odd keys, but might change all, if it is like discovery i just need to keep flob end of key to send signal to car ignition that the key is there
car has fail its french control technic (mot) because key is stuck in in steering lock, have agreed to buy it if okay as is, i will just have to take it to a centre when fixed,

on another point the car has just had 4 new tyres as the front will normally wear first but that should not be a problem as smaller front wheels will reduce difference between front and back speeds or is it?, so do i rotate tyres or let the front run down then fit new tyres to the back and move back to front

Hi bought car at weekend runs very well, think I have sorted out key stuck in steering lock, took lock off gave key sharp tap and came straight out, cleaned and oiled with wd40 and now both keys work turn with no problems, and show no signs of wear need to get new bolts to refit it back on but think it is sorted,
only other problem car thinks back door is open, anyone know where the sensor is can not see anything that looks like sensor

best to use dry lubricant, not WD40, as it attracts dust and will clog up again.
was not sure about wd40 but I have used it for same before think as long as i keep a eye on it it will be okay , might have to clean it out a bit if problem and try something eles, only took 30min to take off and sort out, that 2800€ per hour at landrover dealers, don't you just love them?

WD40 is probably the least problematic of the wet lubricants to use, simply because as it dries out over time. However as MHM said, lock barrels should always be lubricated witb a dry lubricant.
