What does it do, what does it look like, and which series land rovers have one?

If I google them I see entirely different pictures so I'm a bit lost..

It's mentioned in the service schedule for 20,000 miles..

Crankcase emission valve is a better name. Series 3 petrol only I think. Supposed to prevent oil from crankcase breather reaching inlet manifold.Often removed and blanked off.

Therre could be a range of things doing slightly different jobs. Orginally engine breathers were to air, then they got fed into the intake to cut the smoke by burning the oil. On a diesel you have to be careful putting crankcase fumes in the intake as a worn engine can self fuel off the engine oil vapour and run away. On a petrol an intake blow back could flash over to the cranksae oil vapour. Now it is out of fashoin to recirc the crankcase fumes as it makes more particulates and so the go to a filter. So it could be a flame trap or a filter depending on when it was fitted and what the prevailing fear was at the time. If you are MOT exempt it doesn't matter, but if not then make sure its either an optional extra in which case leave it off, or if not, its fitted and working. The new MOT has a fail in for emissions control mods, I think its aimed at removal of DPFs and CATs but it could be interpreted to inlcude breather recirc systems, best bet is probaly leave it off unless its obviously something should be there..

Yes,if they go wrong engine oil can be sucked into the manifold and then you get clouds of blue smoke. They were a poor design not like a modern [ ish ] separator on a 200/300tdi.
