Disco 2 Do different variants have different tailgate lock mechanisms?

And how do I make sure I get the right one?

It's taking a couple of presses to get the tailgate to unlock, and from what I've read on here whatever I do now is only delaying the inevitable.

When I ask eBay's part checking menus (e.g. here) it lists two variants of the MKII TD5. Obviously this tool probably is a little shoddy, so I wanted to ask if there are indeed different lock mechanisms; and if so how do I know if I'm getting the right one?

From what I can see there is only one tailgate door latch for all versions of the D2. Part number FQR100570, And a quick check on google for other suppliers hasn't shown up any updated or superceded versions.
When you say that "It's taking a couple of presses to get the tailgate to unlock", exactly how many? It does take two (officially "a couple") presses of the fob to unlock.

Oh, I didn't realise that it was supposed to take two. But it is sometimes taking at least three; though not very often so I guess it isn't as urgent as I was thinking.

On the D2, the standard setting for the central locking is press the unlock button once to unlock the driver's door then a second press to unlock all the other doors.

Oh, well all of the other doors open on the first press. I guess the previous owner must have changed it...

I suppose the next question, then, is can I change it myself?

Yes, with ordinary tools and a modicum of ability and some care. You will have to remove the door card and inner anti-splash plastic.
Most of the door latches on the Disco 2 will just bolt into place with no real need for trying to get things aligned again.

Oops, I was unclear. Sorry, I meant would I be able to change the central locking setting?

You can change the setting using a diagnostic unit to unlock all doors using the fob with one press, or only the drivers door with the first press and then a second press to unlock the others.

If your tailgate is not working the same as the other doors then the actuator is normally starting to fail. Changing the unit is easy enough just fiddly , small fingers help.

Mine has nearly always needed 3 blips to open the tailgate, especialy in cold weather. Been like that since I had it 10 years ago, so leave it alone, no big deal to do the extra blip.

That's true, until the mechanism gives up and you can't even lock it anymore; that's all I'm really worried about.

If and when that happens you can lock it maually form the inside, till you get a new mech.
