So i'm trying to find the source of some whirring noise.

There is some play in the front flange on the transfer box. This much..

But it seems to say a bit of play isn't a bad thing, it's a bearing that has some play. Please advise.

All UJ's are good, the wheel bearings are good, hmmm. I'm hoping I keep finding things that aren't simple 'engine' or 'gearbox' that are potential sources.

its a ball bearing and shaft is supported at the other end by a diff gear so there will a little play unlike a taper bearing which should have none

Glad I checked before buying new bits and taking stuff to pieces.

Do you have an r380? Don’t they have something to do with 5th gear and arear bearing thy can whine?
Possibly - this is before you get to 5th though. Seems to go when the accelerator is taken off. I think it might be the turbo, but that was replaced only a year ago.

it could be in either box but noise on overrun is often a diff pinion bearing

I would look at it simply, if it aint leaking oil the bearing cant be that worn.

yeah that was my first thought. but there is no play in that bearing at all. I've just been for a drive with the front prop off and the Tbox in locked. Noise still there.

If I put my foot on the clutch it went away. So that points to Gearbox and Tbox right?

Thats a good position to have in general with land rovers. I must write that down on the dash.

Just remember it has to have oil in there in the first place:D

if it makes no difference drop t/box sump plate and see if intermediate has any play, you can adjust it by tightening the nut on the end 30mm socket

I have changed the prop over but I haven't been able to drive it yet as I changed the front wheel bearing the other day and stupidly put the spacer inside the drive flange - it FK'ed everything up. So I have had to deal with that tiny mistake that has led to big trouble. Hopefully a new spacer will arrive early next week - along with a new flange. The CV shaft seems ok - so hopefully I can get the car rolling ASAP and get back to solving the other problem.

@jamesmartin Can you help identify something for me.

I'm trying to replace the spacer that I melted. It's not a shim - in fact the shaft didn't have any shims fitted to it. It was just one spacer, about 8mm thick. The only replacement I can find are the tiny shims.

Could this be that the bronze bush (FRC4319) is completely warn and the axle was fitted with a big spacer to solve the problem as a jury rig? Therefor I should get a bronze bush and shims and that will be all I need? I can't find any diagram that shows a large spacer in-between the cir-clip and drive flange.

there is no larger spacer between the circlip and drive member just shims, should knock in a turn iv cv is running too far out, might be the wrong cv fitted, should be stc3051

crap - I'm getting on a ferry on thursday and that is looking very unlikely. One small job turning into something big and I haven't even solved the noise issue which started all this.

Do you mind letting me know how I know which CV I have? It's a 1985 110 LHD, and the parts catalogue seems to list so many choices.

if its an 85 axle and not a 300 it has the long cvs and thick drive members, if its poking out to far theres an issue have you any pics of drive member and cv etc

these are the only photos i can get for now. Tomorrow I could take the CV out and take a look. this is the 6mm spacer that was used. So sounds like a bodge?

have you got the right drive member, and where was this spacer

that is a very good question. I'm not sure I can check the drive member without knowing the depth it should be, but let me explore things.

The spacer was between the driver member and the cir-clip. Basically under the dust cap.
