Can't lock car

Engine display saying tail gate open... I've closed it a number of times, checked for obstructions etc. On the last attempt it locked ok.

Leaving work this afternoon and the same message again, only this time it won't let me lock it at all. I've opened and closed tail gate again a number of times but it's not letting me lock the car this time.

Any ideas as to what this might be...

Forgot to mention... Freelander 2 sport, 10 plate

It'll be the tailgate lock. It's a relatively common problem. If you get the lock replaced, the problem should go away.

Thanks for that... am I right in thinking that until this is changed I can't lock the car??

I have the same problems. When you open the door does the glass drop? Mine did and I found pushing the glass down - it moved about half inch . Slammed the door hard., the glass moved up as normal and I could lock it. Yes you will need a new lock.

I’ve tried all the suggestions from a search last night but nothing is working and now the tailgate is shut firm and won’t open at all.
