Hi all, I’ve been using Pirelli Scorpion STR tyres on my 06 Freelander 1 TD4. I’m about to change all four tyres but have found out they no longer make the Pirelli Scorpion STR tyres. What tyres are you useing.

I’ve also just had a disaster. Recently had a new clutch fitted then noticed a slight vibration and a whining noise. On a recent trip down to my caravan in west wales, I noticed smoke coming from the rear of the car, on pulling over and looking underneath the car I found the diff to be on fire. Luckily I had a fire extinguisher in the back of the car and managed to put it out. The car is now in a garage waiting to have a new diff fitted at a cost of £800. Everything was fine before the new clutch change and the only other thing I did was to put two part warn tyres on the front which had previously been on the car before the last four tyre change but with 5mm of tread still on them I though they were to good to throw away, was this a very costly money saving idea ???

I suspect your post on tyres has been ignored ....

Whereas your post concerning your diff would have received a better response ...

When did you last do the One Wheel Up Test ?

As @Dippypud has said, people were probably ignoring your tyre question.
On other boards on the forum "Which tyres" questions usually elicit replies such as "round, black rubber ones with a big hole in the middle and knobbly bits on the outside seem to work well for me".
Tyre choice is such a personal thing. It can depend on so many factors, not least what you can afford, whether you are looking for new, remould or part worn tyres, what do you use the vehicle for most, any personal buying preferences such as not wanting Chinese tyres and is your particular choice available in your location.
Your best bet is to ask the question of a local tyre fitter or indie garage.
 
Many thanks for the replies gents. Cost of the tyre is not a problem as said above I’ve used Pirelli Scorpion STR’s in the past which don’t come cheap but for some reason they have stopped making the 225/55/17 size which means I now have to change all 5 tyres again. The car is used mainly on road local during the week but on weekends it’s used for a 200 mile round trip to our caravan in west wales. Some have mentioned the Hanook, brand but having never used them I don’t know what they are like. I’m really looking for suggestions what others are using and how they find them. Continental is a consideration but which one ??.
 
When buying tyres always follow the golden rules. Make sure:

They're round
Hold air
The right size for the wheel
Fit on yer Freelander

Pirelli scorpion str would be my choice for a FL1. If yer can't get them int size yer want have a look at their UK web site to see what other model tyres the have.

Yes the forum is quiet when compared to years ago. Too much arguing and not enough peeps posting up interesting stuff.
 
Thanks Hippo, yes agree the forum is very quiet it used to be buzzing with interesting topics. The next size up is the 235 55 17, but bit worried about it being a bit close to the spring.

235/55/17 will fit fine. I've just fitted 235/55/18 and there's still plenty of clearance.
A few members have fitted 225/65/17 without clearance issues.
