Hi
Was considering buying a L322 td6 2004 . Are they much more troublesome and expensive to run than my 06 Disco 3 tdv6 ?
The L322 considering it is old, with full service history , and 130k miles
Opinions appreciated.

Depends. Both can be good. Both can throw big bills. Depends on each individual Vehcile really.

The L322 should be the more luxurious of the two. Although many diesels are low spec.

The D3 is a newer design with a much better and more powerful engine, better gearbox and newer electronics/infotainment. The Td6 is quite slow and underpowered in the RR. And the gearbox massively under specced. Meaning they have all had rebuilds, often multiple times.

If your mileage isn’t high maybe look for a V8. The 4.4 BMW unit in the same era L322’s is quite nice and uses a better gearbox. The 4.4 Jaguar engine in the D3 (rare in the U.K.) is also very nice. Most V8’s are also well specced and optioned. The RRS is essentially identical to the D3. Just different styling and a slightly shorter wheelbase. But same components. However there are more V8 RRS’ than D3’s in the U.K.

That was a lot of info in one reply thanks
Does the RRS TDV6 (may consider one ) have a better auto box than the L322 ? You say its identical to D3
I do about 25k a year and tow so has to be diesel I am afraid.

The RR's are better built than the D3's (you've only got to sit is a RRS and they are built better than the D3's to my amazement, the full fat RR is better built than the sport IMO)
The gearbox's which come on the TDV6 D3 is more modern and better and stronger than the 'weaker' GM box mated to the TD6 RR.
I wouldn't say the TD6 RR is 'underpowered', however it's not the fastest of cars.
I think the TD6 engine itself is a better engine in terms of reliability than the TDV6, the TDV6's do seem to have a lot of issues, oil pumps/ cranks snapping not to mention cambelts to change.
The TDV6 is a more refined engine in the D3 and does have a little more power.

HTH

Water ingress regularly destroys the electronics in the rear N" quarter and has wrecked the EAS pump in my mates L322 , if the air suspension goes wrong goes wrong it can be a difficult to diagnose and fix. I prefer my P38, however if the D3/4 was not so hard to maintain I would be interested as like the shape.

Yeah the RRS has the same box as the D3.

25k a year is a lot of miles. So diesel would make sense. Or maybe LPG. The BMW 4.4 runs well on LPG.

Not sure what weight you are towing. But Jeep Grand Cherokee or Commander and the latter Mitsubishi Shoguns might be worth looking at too. All capable vehicles. And not so off roady the 5.0 litre V10 Tdi Touareg is probably similar in price terms.

So the RRS after 2006 has the same engine TDV6 and auto box as the D3 I now understand . If so that is good enough as a few friends of mine have over 200k miles on their D3s TDV6 and that is nothing to complain about .
I had the usual problems with my D3 ,Handbrake ,compressor, EGR over five years , but its a lovely vehicle to drive and I can live with that .. Range Rover is very popular here and prices are the same as a D3. If I thought they were similar I am tempted by a RR tdv6 now.

.

The RRS from 2004 (not 2006) had the same 2.7 TDV6 engine AND gearbox as the D3
Secondly, your tempted by a RRS not RR ....don't get the two confused - very different cars!

The sport like the d4 is body of for quite a few jobs eg turbo`s where as on an l322 you don't have to as the hole car is bigger than a sport and has lots more room, a sport is not really a range rover.

Sorry but hats nonesense. The L322 is not a lot bigger. It is also a unibody or monocoque construction. There is no separate chassis. The D3/4 & RRS use a hybrid chassis with a part unibody assembly on a ladder frame. Lifting the body is an intended design element to aid access.

If the RRS isn’t a Range Rover. Then the L322 certainly can’t be. As it doesn’t use a single Rover component and was completely funded by BMW! And hardly shares any design elements with previous Range Rovers.

I'd just say that, having had one, I'd never touch a diesel 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee again. The straight 6 Mercedes engine is inaccessible at the back and suffers from "black death", and low range always locked the transmission, making it unsuitable for my sort of on/off tarmac towing. Round here no garage, including Merc indy's, would touch the one I had and the main Jeep agent was unbelievably bad (no diagnostics, not able to carry out tracking on 4x4's etc. etc.).

It was more handy in car parks than the FFRR and the wife liked it, but definitely not for me.

The L322 in terms of interior spaceis a fair bit bigger than the original RRS. The RRS inside is quite cramped. The D3 Has more room inside and is longer than the RRS.

RR Tdv6 after approx 2005 has D3 engine and D3 auto box and electric handbrake ?

RRS from the start of production (2004) has the same engine 2.7tdv6 and same gearbox as the D3. They are the same car underneath, just a different shell.

But a lighter vehicle !

may i ask plse, don’t know if you’ve had the same with the amount of garages that say the body has to come off on a D3 to replace the rear timing belt, cross over pipe, turbo when indeed it can be done without removing the body

thks
