I'm going to be looking for a Good tow car in a few yrs to help run my HOPEFULLY future hobby/business.

Being a landy nut i've swayed towards the Discovery.

But which one?

The disco 1 or 2?

What are they like towing?

Whats the MPG like

What areas to look at?

Auto or manual?

v8 or TD5 or 300tdi?

cheers.

Depends upon budget and ability of maintenance. Technically td5 is a better tow vehicle but tdi is simpler to work on but both have issues. Personally I have a tdi which will tow all day long and I like its simplicity but a td5 is a more refined vehicle if you budget for a code reader.

If you're using it for a business you need reliability.
Depending on what you'll be doing I'd suggest you need something that looks clean & tidy, turning up in a rusty scruffy heap may put potential customers off as they may assume that your work will be of a similar standard.
Corrosion is an issue on both, the D1 all over & the D2 the rear chassis.

Cheers all.

Regarding transmissions..

Would a manual be stronger than an Auto with regards to heavy loads?

I'm hoping they'll be able to tow a Beaver tail trailer with anything from a Mini to a Range rover on it.

so 1-3 tonnes.

Thanks.

Range Rover P38 with a 4.6 V8, multi-point LPG combined with megasquirt for fuel and spark, should get 15 to 17 mpg and will drag anything just about anywhere with absolute ease and typical Hilton level luxury.

D1 rotten body, old hat now but basic electrics.

D2 rotten chassis, still quite modern but complex electrics

D3 gives RR luxury levels and light years ahead of the older siblings and very complex electronics and some are showing rusting of the T5 chassis but the bodies are bomb proof it seems.

Id go for a d2 td5 personally, bullet proof engine and easily tuned within safe limits.

You'd be very hard pressed to find a disco 1 that isn't a rot box, or one that will turn into one soon after purchase, you have to be really handy with a welder to even consider a Disco 1 in my opinion.

I think you have to take a little hammer with you if looking at a D2 and tap around rear spring mounts, rear xmember....everywhere really as they are made of fairly shocking quality steel. A galv chassis under a tuned D2 td5 would be my ideal family vehicle... Good luck either way! :)

Thanks for the reply :)

The D2 or a working P38 are what i'm swaying towards

You'd be a braver man than me if you go for the p38, absolutely notoriously unreliable, even looked after ones will throw a wobbler at the drop of a hat, very comfortable though!
If you're even considering v8 + lpg, id still go D2 V8! :)

Yes the more reliable D2 v8 seems the better option reliability wise!

Hmm

Ahhh

decisions decisions lol ..

I’d never tow again with a td5 Discovery, it’s the most unstable car I’ve ever used for towing, and I’ve driven some sheds,
I’d go as far as say it was dangerous and that’s after spending thousands trying to sort it.
D3 is a top tow car.

D3 is a top row car.
I put a thread on here about the one that jackknifed with caravan near me at work on the a69. I suspected ace failure as it had a massive snake on as it passed me
