Freelander 1 Steering wheel with audio controls

Hi all
I'm a new Landy owner, new to the forum. My Landy has a standard steering wheel without audio controls, if I fit one with the controls will it work? Is all the necessary wireing there already? The reason I ask is, I watched a video on youtube where a guy swapped his standard wheel for one with audio controls and it worked.

It depends on which stereo is fitted I think. I don't think the base stereo has the steering wheel facility, but I could be wrong. The wiring should be there, so fit them and see if it works.
 
You usually need an adaptor that attaches to the multiplug.
The actual one you will need depends on the radio that you get.
 
Thanks for the reply. The head unit in it at the moment is the basic radio cassette but it's broken, radio works but that's all.
I'm going to put a Sony head unit in which has a remote jack in the back, but I don't have a remote unit for it. I thought I might buy a Landy cd unit if a wheel with the controls would work.
 
I have changed my radio twice since owning my FL and the steering wheel controls have always worked fine with the correct adaptor.

I have always used 'Dynamic Sounds' for my connectors. They know their stuff and will advise the correct adaptor or wiring harness and how to make adjustments if required to get it all working.
 
OK thanks, so if I get the wheel with controls I just need a wiring adapter for the radio and it should all work? The wiring to the steering wheel should already be wired to the multi connector? Does this only apply to a compatible freelander head unit?
 
If you are using a Sony HU then you will need the wheel control adaptor to make them work. I changed the resistances of my wheel controls as I'm to tight to spend money on things I can do myself.

I have the controls already on mine, with the factory stereo (6CD Changer) but they don’t seem to work... the stereo itself works as it should it’s just the remote controls that don’t... any ideas on a fix for this? I’m removing the central console tomorrow to wrap it so will have a poke around whilst it’s out but wondered if there is a common fault? Thanks

It's normally the clock spring at fault. That's the most likely part of the system to fail.

Yes it's the rotary coupler behind the steering wheel.
Do a resistance check at the HU end of the wiring. It just a simply resistance ladder, so a DMM should show a different resistance with each different button.

You need to check the resistance of the switches as you operate each one. You can do this at the stereo plug.
Pin 18 and 19, Black/Red and Black/White. Just measure the resistance between the two.
