I am pretty sure the cylinder on my 88" Says 1" on it.

I've changed to post 1980 set up like 109s

A standard 88" has 1 1/4 on the front and 1 on the back if we are talking about the rear with 10" drums then the cylinder is the wrong one.

Sorry got the reply after msg sent. If you have 10" drums on the back though won't you need the 1" cylinder?

But , I've changed to the dual line servo, post 1980 Swb braking system, which I think uses 109 front 11 inch drums and the old 10 inch 88 front set up on the rear as standard on Swb. Which has the 1 1/4 cylinders, so not sure what's going on

I could be wrong but I think the 109 has 11" discs all round, still think the cylinder is the wrong one for the drum.

Yes sorry it does have 11 all round. But part book shows same cylinder on rear for 88 as the 109 after 1980. Bit confusing !!

Just had a look, yes it says the parts are the same so now I'm confused as well
I don't see how the parts can be the same after 1980 if the drum size stays the same....You must need the smaller cylinder despite what the books say, gonna have a ginantonix and peruse.........

shoes rtc3411
109 has bigger drum and different shoes etc

Don't go filing the shoes, its ok to chamfer the lining but the shoes should fit. I think your cylinder looks big, the one below is correct. It also strikes me that the correct cylinder for your spring set up may not have a spring inside it, does anyone know?

This is a 109 rear brake, that top spring between the shoes is really strong so it easily overcomes the spring in the cylinder.

The setup with spring between the shoes has two adjusters.
The top edge of each lining needs chamfer , if no chamfer the edge of the lining on trailing shoe gets caught on the drum in reverse and is applied with what is called self servo effect.
I actually chamfered the bottom edge on the trailing shoe also.

Found this which is correct number for my brakes and is 1 1/4 size . So I think I had the right cylinder .
Regards the spring inside the cylinder I'm non the wiser

OK I'm wrong, the SLS SWB does have a spring, just checked parts book.

Wrong shoes possibly, aren't they the front ones.

No think they are right rtc3411 which should be sane for all 10inxh swb. Aftermarket though so may be not accurate

Well I've bit the bullet and bought a new old stock set of backplates cylinders and shoes part number frc2393. Frc2394. From pablancard at 59 pound a side . Great price but I see once I bough them the website then increased there price to 160 a side , so was lucky there!!!
Hopefully all should fit now

Backplates are discontinued and getting rare. Be warned. Craddocks quotes £145 each! Dunsfold charge £75 each and only have 4 in stock. I knows cos I’ve had to buy one. Beats me why cos it’s just a pressed shape with some drilled holes.
