I didn't know which forum to post this in so I put it in the general one.
I am putting a 2.5n/a into a series 3 and today I set about firing up the engine before I go any further, It was pretty much a bench test so I had a jerry can and a frame to hold the filter etc, and when I looked underneath in a puddle of diesel was this part.
It is a spring about 15mm by 5mm with a little blanking plate in it at the bottom(top?)
It looks like some kind of non-return gadget but as I had off most of the fittings I have no idea where it goes or quite honestly if its even from this engine!!
The engine did fire up with the aid of easy start so its not essential , and nothing went bang or even remotely crunch, any ideas would be appreciated because like I say I have no idea,
thanks for looking.
Sorry about the pictures my phone camera is real quality:rolleyes:

Pic is pretty bad, but I wonder if it might be the pressure release from the oil filter adaptor assembly.

I wouldn't use easy start if I was you, it shouldn't be necessary.

I agree easy starts not too good but after 2 hrs of not even a flicker of life just loads of smoke I'd had about enough.....

Yes what did it was the second battery I put in parallel, that definitely filled the shed with smoke, did clear though so hoping the engines a goodun.
I didn't have the oil filter off yet, just all the fuel ones.

2.5 NA are a pretty strong engine. Should be OK if it hasn't done huge mileages.

I think I have it narrowed down to the non return valve on the return side of the injection pump, can any body confirm that this spring just drops into it as is and there isn't anything else that might be missing
Thanks

I have a second engine that had the pipes on that I wanted so when I swapped them probably, although I don't think the original pipe had the spring in it anyway as it wasn't there when I had a look to check.
Thats why I was asking, just to make sure thats actually where it did come from:confused:

Not sure. I have changed dozens of those pumps, and never managed to release the spring.

Its not in the pump its part no aau3509 as shown in the parts book but on mine its screwed into the pump and not the fuel filter

That would mean putting the spring in the other way round hence my confusion, what I need is a diagram to show it in bits but tinternets not co-operating and no one seems to have seen it before.....

I have seen hundreds. So many I have never looked at a diagram.
It should be fairly self explanatory, there is a flow arrow on each of the pots on the filter head, fit it so the flow can't go in the opposite direction.
