Its a head scratcher this one. There's a smell coming up from the front, just in front of the water pump.

Its a bit like burning rubber, a bit like burnt oil, and a bit like burning electrics, but none of these smell the same.

Aux belt is newish, showing no signs of wear on ribs or edges.
Tensioner is less than 2 years ld.
Alternator is new (changed because there was a noise - it wasn't the alternator!)
water pump is new

No play in any pulley, except a little bit rotational in PAS pump, which has previously been a bit noisy - much better since I changed the PAS fluid today by the 'suck a little out, refill, run it and repeat' method, until it looked clean.

After a drive if about 2 miles to home, the smell is still there - there is nothing directly below where the smell comes up from. Its like the smell is carried up on the rising heat, if that makes sense?

Thoughts please people!

I am going to make a wild guess that it is a 300tdi, because you have not said...LOL

Have you checked the hose that sits above the water pump, quite often gets pushed down onto the pulley.

Cheers

oops, yes, 300tdi :)

I know the hose you mean, goes to the heater? - this is cable tied to the hose above to keep it clear :)

Yep, guarantee most 300tdi vehicles, have a shufti at that hose and you see a knick rubbed out of the bottom of it. ......LOL

I know some nice deep muddy puddles that will sort out that clean engine bay for you.... make it look real good I tell ya..:D:D

my mate has an s2 with a focus rs engine now that is mental compared to mine but he's managed to
obliterate the engine twice 3rd time lucky for his engine builder/tunner lol
