Do we need new exhaust /costs ?

Hiya, our gorgeous Freelander sport td4 is still looking awesome after over 10 years (reg date 2005) though we are starting to get some issues. One is the windows not opening (even after my hubby changed the fuses) and one of the back doors not opening from the inside either.. but I guess that's another question !

The exhaust makes a crazy rattling noise upon ignition and switch off. My husband says he saw rust and splitting when he tried to take a look...... Sound like we need a new exhaust?

Contacted ATS, they can't quote without looking as they said these things can be expensive. Are we talking £100s, £1000?

We have no idea, any advice or suggestions would be very appreciated ;0)

It's most likely the back box as those do split open and drum on the boot floor.

The back box isn't expensive, but having fast fit place do the work will be costly. You're better off finding a reputable LR specialist garage for all maintenance and repair work. That way you'll know it's been done correctly. ;)

Rear boxes are easy to replace by anybody with tools. Don't even need to lift car off the ground.

OK... lol ! will see what they say tomorrow as we booked the car for new tyres (they'll just be checking the exhaust anyway)..... and let u know. Thank you !:)
 
It is most likely only the back box which is about £60.00 fitted even less if you do the job your self,

In my experience, tyre fitters are completely unaware of the Freelander's special tyre requirements. This is one reason why so many people come on here saying that the 4X4 system has exploded just a few days or weeks after new tyres were fitted.

So the rules for tyres are:
All tyres MUST be the same make, type and size and all pumped up to the same pressure.

You can fit just 2 new tyres, providing they make a set with the 2 that remain on the vehicle. However the 2 new tyres MUST be fitted to the rear axle. The 1/2 worn rear tyres are then moved to the front.

This strict tyre maintenance must be followed, or the 4X4 system does go bang with horrendously expensive results.

Thanks again for all the info. About the LR specialist, there was one brilliant one here and they just disappeared overnight ! The only other place is the Rangerover / Jaguar showroom and they have a bit of an attitude...... don't call back for appointment, don't care.... because they just want to sell the latest models that cost gazillions lol

I changed the back box on my 2006 td4 in about an hour in fact the hardest part was getting the bracket off the old part and use it on the new one , being the plonker that I am I didn't buy a new clip I didn't realise the old one was spot riveted to the old exhaust . If anything it dose not fit 100% straight but I am thinking that is because it is an aftermarket part
 
I bet you have the child lock on that back door that will not open it is so easy to knock it on when cleaning if you open the door from the outside you will see the little leaver next to the lock

Jeepers - you're keen if you're likely to knock the child lock when you're cleaning!

I might clean the car a couple of times a year - depending on how often we get visitors - the inside gets cleaned by the mats getting taken out and shaken, the outside only gets cleaned where the Karcher can hit :)

I'm the same GG. I'm kinda slack when it comes to cleaning the car. I find washing the dirt off shows up all the bramble rash, so I don't wash it.

When I fill up with diesel, I'll use their windscreen cleaning gear to clean the bird poop off the bonnet. Probably a bit naughty - but it gets parked under a tree at home and I'm sure the droppings are not good for the paintwork.
 
UPDATE ON THE TYRES, well, my hubby said they did a great job and put the back tyres to the front and the new ones at the back, they knew that already. About the door, I don't think the child lock is on..... will check though.

EXHAUST yes the box was the problem :) £100 for the box and fitting, done there and then..

NOW......... as he drove off, he said, the amber light for Engine came on. He went back, they ran diagnostics which came up saying there was a problem with the engine thermostat (unrelated surely?). But then everything seemed to go back to normal and no more warning light. Any ideas on that one??
 
Are new tyres the same as whats on there already?

The thermostat can't put the MIL on. It could just be an erroneous code, so just see if it returns.
