hi all

I did the tappets and changed the a/c and surp' belts the other day on my disco. I knew there was a bit of a noise from somewhere mainly when cold, and when the fan and the belts were off I found that the bottom a/c idler is shot and so is the fan pulley bearing, also there is a crack all the way round the thread that the fan sits on which obviously is not ideal

Question is, what's the best way of repairing it, there must be ways to avoid buying a cover these days?

Many thanks

Towsey

That's the back cover mate but thanks anyway. I'm wanting the best way of replacing the fan pulley bearing and flange, and the a/c idler but il look on the bay

Thanks

You don't need to buy a cover. The bearing for the fan can be replaced if you are prepared to do a bit of work. The trick is to buy a replacement water pump bearing from John Deere - it's an imperial size not metric, and they sell one with a long shaft.

You basically press the flange off your bearing (cutting the bearing shaft if needed) and then heat the cover with boling water to release the bearing. You can then cut the long shaft off the replacement bearing and press it into the cover then press the flange on. It's about 15 quid for the bearing from john deere - I'll see if I can find my part numbers.

That sounds like a plan cheers, convenient that I'm a Deere fan and we have a dealer in town. Part number or wot it's off would be good if at all possible

Thanks

The part number as I understand it is a Koyo http://www.bearing-web.com/en/bearing-885802RS-KOYO-341576.html which is an imperial size. It obviously needs a bit of trimming.

You will pay big bucks, so you get them from JD who obvioulsy buy them in batchs of 10,000 at once I guess...

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/3221...=1007204&device=c&campaignid=207297426&crdt=0

Or from the local dealer - part is JD9257 -

HOWEVER! - I never saw the box or PN apart from a bit of paper the man from JD gave me. I took in my bearing removed from the cover and he matched it up for me and came back with a loose one. (and the PN on a bit of paper). I'd strongly suggest going into the dealers with the removed bearing and doing the same to make sure you get the right think.

Hi Neilly

Sorry not been on here much lately, had a bit on. Unfortunately that's the same reason that this job has not been done yet either...really sorry I can't help you.
Be nice if you share your experience here tho

Hi Towsey,

I have not refitted my fan yet, so will keep an eye on it. When I do something with it I will post it up.

Cheers

Haha I know the feeling. Be nice to be able to get round this issue tho, for us and all others after us. It's good when something like this gets solved, a bit like not needing to buy new tensioners
