Defender 110 fast wiper speed not working....

Hi all,

The windscreen wipers on my 2002 Td5 Defender 110 DCPU work on intermittent and normal speeds, however they stop working if put into the fast speed.

Does anyone have any ideas where to start?

i would start with the wiper stalk switch/wiring. I could be wrong but I seem to remember the fast speed wire does not go through the relay but straight into the loom and then motor?

the off, int and slow do (I think!)

IIRC the 'fast wipe' should be Blue/Light Green directly from the switch to the motor, so check that you have battery voltage, and work backwards from there.

Did you ever find the reason for the lack of the fast speed wipe? I have a Def 90 2001 TD5 that has the same problem. I have already added a new wiper stalk on the steering column and a new relay behind the fuse box as well but no change. I am happy wit the slow wipe and the intemittent as well but it would be nice to have the faster wipe work too. I think i read there was a internal switch in the wiper motor itself and that is my next item to be swapped for a new unit but not if i can avoid it.
Anyone have any idea on how to fix this issue or what to do before spending more cash?

You are referring to the park switch on the motor. I had the same problem with my late model 300tdi and was told it would be the park switch, like you I had already replaced the stalk. I replaced the park switch and the wipers then no longer parked correctly so I refitted the old one and put up with no fast wipe. If you get to the bottom of it I would certainly be interested as well.

No not the park switch at all. My wipers park just fine . There is an internal electrical bit inside the wiper motor that when the wiper stalk is moved to the high speed option it then sends more power to the motor and it then speeds up. Nothing to do with the park switch bit which is on the outside of the motor. When i move my wiper stalk on the steering column to what should be the fast position the wipers stop where they are. I then move it down to slow or intermittent and they operate again at slow or intermittent speed.
So i guess its another expensive purchase of a new wiper motor and more time to waste fitting it. Thats unless someone can tell me how to find and fix the problem on here. Strangely enough it passed the mot test like this but i suppose they are working.
I also had issues with the wiper washer system and fixed it. I added one new pump inside the front nearside wing even though when you pushed the wiper arm end to squirt water it made a normal buzzing noise but no fluid at all. I also changed the entire plastic feed pipe from the washer bottle to the inside of the dash onto the washer nozzle. A new nozzle was also installed and hey ho, i have water squirting up now just in time to be mot'd. All the bits were bought on the web on Ebay.
I just wish i had fast speed wipers as well........

If i can get a friend to use his Multi meter on my 2001 Def 90 TD5 wiper motor i can test the wiring to it from the stalk on the steering column. If it doesnt connect or work, i will then have to also buy a new wiper motor as i am told it has an internal switch that detects the higher voltage from when you move the stalk up to the high speed wipe position. Having already changed the relay, the stalk / switch and the fuses as well its got to be either the motor or a wire off somewhere if the slow and intermittent speeds both work normally.
If i do buy a new motor, i will also buy the 140 degree internal cog assembly as well as the 115 degree standard wipe is not good at all. Has anyone got experience of fitting this to a standard motor and what motor was used or purchased and from where? There are loads for about £45 on EBAY but are they any good or should i pay more for a real Lucas one and then add it the new cog/drive to it?
I am still hoping someone has already had the high speed issue and solved it but nobody has replied yet.

Solved the lack of higher speed wipers at last. I had already renewed the relay and the switch on the steering column. I then spent a day stripping out the dash to use a m/meter on it all. I swapped over the wires so i could ensure the switch was talking to the motor so i got slow on the high speed which proved the connection etc. So i bit the bullet and bought a new motor and drive cog .
I fitted it and it worked immediately but for a LHD vehicle.... So, i have to move the white plastic ramp thing on the cog. I did check this by looking at the Britpart instructions but they were so faint and useless.
I guess the motors internal switch or resistor had blown causing the loss of high speed.
My new relay gives me a timed delay on intermittent and normal and high speed is now back again.
All in it has cost about £100 but at least i know its all new and not likely to fail this winter... i hope.
