Hi,
So, here we go :)
I think i need to spray &/or replace my brake light switch but these two only come on when I brake and then go off (after a 'while').
Should they never come on under normal driving on the road?

HDC will only illuminate on the dash when you turn HDC on. It will either illuminate constantly or flash, depending if HDC is available or not. Like in the right gear for it to work or not. TC will only illuminate on the dash if it activates. If both come on when braking then go oft after a while, then it sounds similar to when my brake switch failed. They're cheap and easy to change.

Thanks, I will put a new one on.
Presumably you meant 'cheap' if not bought from LR.
Do you know of a reliable place to get these online?
I am in Lisbon but can also get things sent on from a UK address.
I do know how to Google, but I am sure there will be hundreds of ebay like options

There are occasions when buying from a main dealer is easier than anywhere else. Over ere Int UK I can order it before lunch and collect before 9am the next day. They know what the right part is for ma hippo anorl. Me fred on changing the wishbone is one such event where yer can easily buy the right part but get a superseded part which dun't fit. It's true main dealers are a bit more eggspensive but if yer need the part quickly then it's an option. Offset the cost by not having yer vehicle ont road and the loss of earnings etc. Some dealer prices are cheaper than online but not all.

Int UK there's several parts suppliers and many will ship outside of the UK. Some eggsample prices from one of them:

Over here the main dealers are not interested in F1, and haven't been for a long time. Don't stock anything I don't think, some parts may be shippable from Auckland in a day or 2 otherwise they have to order from UK.

Interesting to know. I've travelled round the world joining country specific Freelander forums for a while and some of them have a similar issue. Previously LR parts were shipped about on a shared service with bmw. Shared to reduce costs. They moved to caterpillar last time I looked. A lot of the forums have found ways to get hold of general parts but struggle with many others. They try to fix a lot more stuff then we do over here due to not being able to replace it. Needs must I guess. With the FL1 being out of production for 11 years I can appreciate why the smaller markets struggle for parts. The main dealers should be able to get them but I would guess there's a delay and possibly an eggstra cost for shipping. By the time things are eggsported around the world it puts the price up anorl. Some forums I've come across have said dealers can't supply things like gear box oil but are happy to advise what alternative they use instead which can be found locally. Some give a little help over the phone if the person is too far away to travel to use their garage services to fix/diagnose problems. I get the feeling peeps in some of the less well oft countries support each other more than we do int UK. Main dealers give a bit of repair/diagnostic advice over the phone which doesn't happen int UK. Probably the remotest place I've found Freelander's is the top left of Russia but can't remember the name. Can't find it on the map either so not sure if it's changed. It's surprising how many of these peeps use LZ for info but discuss it locally in their own language.

When my transmission went bang in 2013, LR here didn't even have a VCU. When a tyre shop bust my locking nut 'key' a year or 2 later, the LR dealer didn't have masters - they couldn't even be bothered to keep a box of locking nut keys. I think they were quite embarrassed about it because they managed to get them off and didn't charge me (I replaced with standard nuts).

The problem as well is choice - when my transmission went bang - LR could get me the parts (IRD & VCU) but it was going to cost $7,500 (£3,750). I just checked on LRdirect for the prices of these and they are $5,886 and $1,369 - so the NZ price is reasonably comparable to the $7,225. However, who pays those prices? LRDirect do an OEM IRD for $1,637 (£800 bloody good price actually!!!) and GKN VCU for $548 - so $2,185 - much nearer to what people really pay. However, getting those shipped faster than the 6 weeks by ship is colossal.

Are you on the main Kiwi Freelander gorup?

There's not a lot of activity on there really - mainly me :)

The most remote place I've seen a Freelander is here...

Thanks,
My experience here with main dealers over the years (LR, ford, VW) has been exclusively extortionate prices and extremely bad and arrogant service.
I have since found by chance an excellent electrical parts place on the other (S) side of the river called Simporal
They told me there were two alternatives for my brake light switch (which looked very similar) so I will take mine off to take as a pattern.
Also, they were next door to an Aladdin’s cave tool and mechanical parts shop :)

Apart from the annoyance is there any problem with these lights coming on? Will it bugger anything up if I dont change the brake light switch for a week or two?

Have you checked the brake lights are actually working?
Ah! The brake lights work, so this means the switch is not the culprit for the TC and descent lights? Electrics sometime work in mysterious ways so this might not be such a stupid question as it seems. Then again it might :)

It doesn't means there's not a fault in the switch - as I understand it, the switch has multiple contacts and not all of them are used to turn the brake lights on.

However, if some contacts are behaving erratically, there's nothing to say the others arn't as well - so they may work when you check to see if the lights come on, but maybe not when you slam your anchors on going down the shop - don't know how likely that is.

Thanks grumpy.
I'll try another switch and see what happens.
Do they just twist to unlock? (I had a quick peek under the pedal and it looks like it might be but I havent got a Haynes nor had time to work out how to mount the rave iso on linux yet)

The switch has 2 contacts so it knows when it's on/off off/on or in transition.

The country I was thinking of was Siberia. Didn't realise they had Freelanders up there. Must be because our heaters are so good. Most parts are difficult to get so they fix stuff themselves more than we do if they can, or find alternatives. Like weld fixing a crack in a Jatco solenoid tin cover. Not on the kiwi site. I don't do FB. I was looking at me you tube stat's one day and it gave a list of the countries where peeps are from who have looked at me video's. That go me searching for me video links to see where peeps have put them up. I found an amazing number of small forums catering for local Freelander owners in many different countries. After joining some were a bit surprised I turned up and had to prove it was the real me by putting something up on ere in an old post then gave them the link. Naturally there's an issue with language so it's difficult talk with them but they're generally quite happy FL owners. Most of them at some point have found LZ and use it for info. LZ pops up a lot on goo gle. A lot can read the English but not speak it. Bit strange having to explain the localism's like who bob is and why he's ga*.

Have no idea but if yer know someone with window then ask them to mount it, then copy the whole directory structure to yer Linux pc as it is. Then just use as is.

I have a feeling that won't work. I think the documents are encrypted or something and wont read using a normal PDF viewer. It has to be accessed using the PDF viewer supplied in the ISO.

Whether it can be printed using a PDF print driver to and actual standard PDF file I don't know - but there are a number of docs to print anyway.

They is licensed/controlled files. It uses the pdf reader combined within the rave iso which yer copy across with it.
Have yer tried it?
