After playing up for the last few journeys the oil pressure warning light has decided that after going out immediately upon engine start it will come back on & stay on. I've convinced myself that there isn't a pressure problem & it's just the switch, so to avoid burning out the bulb before I can replace the switch after the holiday I have disconnected the wire. The electrics on my '87 RRC V8 are pretty basic compared with modern models but will my temporary action effect the charging circuit ?

No, it should not affect the charging but I wouldn't risk running like that.
How do you know you have pressure and how will you know if you suddenly loose it?

+1 the warning light is there for a warning.

Best deal with the cause rather than the symptom.

Have you changed the sender ?

No, it only came on yesterday & what with Christmas ...
Fortunately we have the use of another car for regular usage. I'll get another OP switch fitted as soon as the holiday is over.

You may find that the new one comes with both a metal washer and a rubber 'o' ring. Use whichever type is the one that is already on the car.

Just to be clear.......... the heading of your post says ignition light, but the post itself refers to oil pressure light........... is it the oil pressure light you are talking about?

Pete

SWMBO's OP switch failed recently - light flickering at all engine speeds

When I looked at it, the switch was letting the oil out, where the lucar connector exits the switch body, onto the inner wing  <- and this is why I mention it - oil level had dropped.

I put a gauge on whilst we waited for a new switch. (oil pressure was fine).

Sorry Pete, senior moment - I did mean oil pressure light, don't know what made me confuse the two as it's not as though I can't tell the difference.

Thanks for the warning though not the case here.

Thanks for that, I'll go for an OEM product as genuine is silly money whereas a pattern part will be oriental crap judging by the price.
