P38A Pants, pants and pants

Well after a brief foray into p38 ownership the log book arrived this morning and it's a category D write off that the previous owner didn't declare and I never thought to check.
Top and tail of it is what's worth salvaging off it before I cut my loses and weigh it in. I've already shelled out £100 on a replacement front axle which fortunately I haven't yet spent a day fitting, I also haven't bought a hawkeye to sort out the airbag fault.

Please take the Michael's as much as you like on a big plus side I was going to sell my disco and keep this til the wife talked me out of it

What's the problem, you were happy to buy it, keep it and enjoy

Whilst for most 'issues' it would be a case of buyer beware....but I thought if it was an insurance write off or other category it must be declared to the buyer at the time of sale...!!

I can't remember who on here is the legal guru - but he/she wrote thread called 'crock of sh!t' or something similar....might be worth searching for it and giving it a read....

I thought CAT-D was still usable and insurable.
Depends what you wanted it for I guess.

Just read this:

Should the person who sold me the vehicle have said it is in Cat D?
If you bought the vehicle from a dealer then they should have told you its insurance status. You may be able to make a claim against them.

Private sellers do not have to tell you about the Cat D status. If you ask, they must tell you of any problems they know about — but maybe they didn't know either.

Questions. Do you like the car?
Does it have massive panel gaps?
Will your insurance insure you?
Did you pay over the odds for it?
Surely the seller knew as his logbook would have said cat d as well?

Cat "D" on a P38 could be as little as a broken window/radio theft, I would recommend getting a mechanic mate to give it a look over to ensure theres nothing unsafe etc , then just love it as you woud have

It was never going to be a keeper, my idea was to take it for a mot and depending on the outcome either scrap it or sort out any issues and sell it on. I can't see the point in investing time and money when it'll only fetch cat d money. I'll cut my losses and get rid. Is anything worth taking off before it meets its maker?

Switches, door handles.. where do you want to start. Interior parts are always favourite. Are the seats in good condition?

There's a hole in the drivers seat base and none electric so probably worth more in weight,

Gearbox, transfer box.
Any of the hardware underneath?
It's a shame you had to find out the hard way marmarmar!

Is it a good runner otherwise? Surely someone on here would take it for scrap value to get the running gear off it?

And dont forget the door locks, keep the strikers as well. Which reciever does it have for the remote locking?

Window motors, locking motors, air-con compressor, alternator etc etc etc????? starter motor if you have the time, pretty endless list of high value bits really.

whats the problem?,mines a cat d and it was never damaged,(somebody hit the trailer it was pulling,,and the previous owner claimed that the sat nav in the boot was damaged in the impact, along with the towbar)
