2002 td5 auto gearbox problem

Hi,

I have a 2002 Td5 auto ES, only had it about 4 weeks but has been spot on with no major probs. Today I noticed when putting it into drive a couple of times it didnt pull away immediatly as I pressed the accelarator, but gave a bit of a jolt then she would pull away. Was out with the family this afternoon, reversed out of a parking bay, put it into drive and nothing, engine was just revving as if in neutral ( i did make sure it was in drive ! ) revved the engine but still didnt move, went down into 1st, nothing, went to manual, nothing. So only gear it will move in reverse.
I couldnt hear any grinding or banging noises

Any help as to what the probelm might be ??!!

Im sure some one else with more knowledge will advise but for me it sounds like low gear oil mine did this after a oil change, its awkward to do and it helps with two people, have a check on here for how to do it

Like i said i could be wrong and some one will advise different but worth looking at, when was the oils changed last?
 
clutch a in gear box would be a fair bet common problem on most autos especially diesel,which are harsher than petrols ,drop a capful of oil if its black its the clutch pack
 
Well news from the garage is the gearbox is shot, so a recon one is going in as we speak, gonna leave a fair dent in the wallet though :(

your gear box is unlikely to be shot, but first clutch pack behind oil pump housing called clutch A very simple fix but i guess your not going to find many places that will try to fix ,the clutch pack burns out loosing forward gears but not reverse its been a common fault since they first fitted zf boxes to rrc but petrol takes alot more years for it to happen

How much would you say it would be to replace clutch A ?

Apparantly it was pretty shot to bits inside, they are taking it out reconditioning it and putting it back in, anybody got any idea of what a garage would charge for this ??

its possible but most ive rebuilt have had clutch A with your symptoms working fine in other respects just lost forward gears £100 to replace clutch A plus labour ,remove all 17mm headed bolts in bell hoousing pull off with oil pump there it is first clutch pack ,shot box would cost at least £500 ,

OK for them to take my box out recon it with 12 month warranty is £1395 + VAT. Am I being taken for ride here ????

Hi James,

I'm totally green when it comes to these things, so wouldnt have a clue on the going rate, but now you have said you think about a grand, thats made me feel a little better as I thought the job would only be £500 odd from your earlier posts !! Yes it is out and stripped, it will be ready for collection Tuesday

not quite i understand but i think its probably only clutch A but could possibly be more serious ,if it was clutch A only ,cheap to repair if more then recon required £500 -£600 for box + labour remove/refit £300-£400,now obviously there arent many people like me around nowadays that if get a vehicle will fix auto box fault ,most will just remove and send to specialist to recon so you pay for overhaul wether needed or not as reconditioners have fixed price ,i know since i also recon boxes that this helps for reconditioner as 1 truly poor box is paid for by a number of good boxes that dont require much spent to be done ,the purpose of me putting it down is to try help you but ,it may not as you may not have option but to maybe help someone who may or have the chance to try themselves,

Thanks for your help James, as far as I am aware it was more damage than just clutch A.

I have a problem with my Land Rover Discovery 2 TD5, it's a 1999 reg, automatic.
It struggles to go though the gears, e.g when putting foot to the ground on accelerator, it stays in gear to for a while and doesn't like to change, but when driven 'sensibly' it goes through the gears sweet. I changed the transmission oil and filter and couple weeks ago and the gear change is smooth as anything, no jugging or anything bad everything is okay apart from when I put my foot down it stays in gear 2 for a while before changing and lacks a lot of power and speed. Would appreciate all help given,

The gearbox behaviour you describe is perfectly normal and shows your gearbox is working correctly. If you put your foot to the floor, that changes the revs at which the gears change, if you ease back a bit, the gears will change at lower revs.

could it be possible its an inhibitor switch issue and now the garage says its a full rebuild ..did they produce any pressure checks a clutch pack doesn't not burn out over night it could be a case of lack of oil and temp related
