Hi I'm newbi i have searched the forum but couldn't find an answer hope this has not been posted that meny times before , I have just bought my very first Land Rover Range Rover sport 2005 tdv6 I owned it for about a week and engine has started knocking, I'm looking for another engine I have been told a Peugeot 2.7 hdi engine fits is this true , understand that it would need lots of parts swapping over , I do apologise if this has been posted before but I could not find a post
Hope someone could advise me

hi and welcome

may i ask have u established what is causing the noise first as it may be a simple repair

many others who have replaced engines are using the jaguar 2:7 engines and swapping over the ancillaries

if u bought it from a garage i would seriously reject the landy , quickly in order u can get ur money back and buy a decent one

hope that's of some use to u

plus the Peugeot engine won't fit , it's a front wheel drive and the block is different

u need the ajd v6 engine not the DT17

the engine is part of Ford Duratorq family

Hi thanks for the reply it's a bit of a story I bought the sport of Copart described as cat d light body damage with the bonnet jammed closed I viewed the sport turned it on but did not Rev the engine thought all was ok got it home ran funny as in few taps and knocks thought it was fuel problem, came to it few mornings ago engine came to immediate stop restarted it then the fun started smoke banging clunking from bottom of the engine oil poring out of right bank
It's my fault I should of tested it better but I let my hart rule my head now i have ended up with lovely looking Range Rover with broken engine I called out my local mechanic he's fase said it all he said bottom end gone quit comen he said in these. Il go with what you say il look for a jaguar engine , looks like I have big winter project ahead
Oh well we live and learn

thks for the info and u indeed have a fun project ahead

ref the engines it seems it's 2007 onwards that were destroying the cranks , also oil pump covers can break if not replaced , surprised though by a 2005 , might have never been looked after or got damaged somehow in the accident

know a recon engine are around £5k but seems people are buying a second hand jag, test it with the engine running then breaking the jag for parts

will find u a link of others that have done the transfer

Yeah I think it's not been looked after think il will put some care into it try get it back to good condition
Thanks for the link il have look into that I've been looking at an engine on eBay il try put some pics up now .
Ps try not to be put off buy all the black il make it look more respect full when it's finished lol

that looks nice , here's a pic of mine , i fitted a new grill to break up all the black , prefer black cars as well

it came with chrome door handle and wing mirror covers which i took off,

side steps can hinder off road use, rock sliders are more practical, i intend to use mine what it was made for, nothing extreme but will indeed get it off road

as we share the same chassis etc if u have probs please don't hesitate to post on here , there's a few of us that are happy to help

plse let us know how u get on ,

hi , may i ask where ur getting the engine from plse, reason being there are indeed some unsavoury places around

then if u put the name up on here someone else may know them, great you've got a two post ramp, making like considerably easier

ur not tempted to buy a second hand jag , with the engine running so u can hear it and test to ensure it's all ok, then sell the parts from the rest of the jag to recoup some money

don't forget to check out the disco 3 forum as others have done engine rebuilds

ref the haynes manual the running gear is the same as mine but will be better to get a sport version, seeing there will be a variations, they do indeed do a sport haynes manual , maybe halfords will be the best bet

https://haynes.com/en-gb/land-rover/range-rover-sport/2005-2009

great ref the pics and many thks , will be an interesting thread,

don't forget ask away and always happy to help

hi

is this the company , if it is they are one of the sponsors from the disco 3 forum ,

found them very good and if something for an unknown reason went wrong u would have a come back

i've bought a lot of items from them and found them very good

give them a call and talk to harriet , tell them u belong to the disco3 forum and she will sort out a decent price for u ,

however i've always preferred to buy a car where u can at least hear the engine running , by the sounds of it u know what ur looking for

if i may say though , i've done a buyers guide in what to look for, is in the discovery section, read the bit about the engine side, belts to be done 105,000 miles or 7 x years , which ever comes first

when u start the engine up listen for any rattle, can be signs of the timing chain tensioner

assume ur replace all the belts , inc the rear belt , inc tensioner , oil pump cover , also change the turbo studs for bolts , check cyl compressions , check cross over pipe that is at the rear of the engine

i blanked both my egrs , from. 2007 onwards u need a software update to put the mil light out

u know what ur doing but can at least point u in the right direction in what to do to the engine before it goes back in, saving u time etc

great idea if u do a post on the disco3 forum, someone may know of an engine going and also a massive amount of info from people who have also rebuilt engines , will say hi over there as well when i see ur post

hope that's of some use to u

here's my engine when the belts were changed

before i forget , i bought a diagnostic reader which is key for these cars , mine is an iid from gap, they cost £420 and u can use it via ur ipad , they can virtually do the same as a T4 that land rover use , reflashing ecus, fault codes , altering settings , the list goes on in what they can do

Hi did you send a link it's not come though I'm going to sign up to the disco 3 forum been reading up a bit on the engines and been looking parts I think I'm going to take a chance and rebuild my engine providing there is no extrem damage to block and heads turbo , but saying that if an engine dose pop up I'd probably buy it , you done a tidy job on your timing belt , I have a delfie diognostics kit on lap top it's got landrovers on there up to 2015 , was looking at my car ramp today I'm going to put new concrete under the posts using a g40 mix really strong don't won't the rangerover on my head lol the old Concret is old and cracked it's ok on little Peugeot s but would not trust it on rangeerover ,

hi mate

great call ref ur post ramp seeing the landy weights 2.7 tons , G40 is that like a resin u inject into the floor as u push threaded rod into the floor ,

have seen some put done steel pads under the posts , raw bolting the plate to the floor then the posts so they can't move and spread the weight , but of course u know what ur doing

haven't heard of that diagnostic reader before

here's the link u need

https://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/,

as mentioned a few on there have rebuilt their engines and can advise u of the best place to get all the parts and also any pitfalls etc to look out for

for ur interest this is the link to the gap iid diagnostic if u decide to get one, it will also allow u to set all ur suspension up and a fantastic bit of kit

https://www.gap-diagnostic.com/shop/iidtool-bt/

hope that helps

Hi the guy with the concrete said it's what they use in garages must be super strong
, iv. Been looking around on the disco 3 sites they have so much more detail I seen a video on you tube on taking body off and engine out rebuild jeezz it looks like a huge job there are cam chains in the head, pipes electric s all over lol it put me off a bit lol , had my mate up last night he seams to think it's top end knocked but regardless engine out
how long do you recon it would take to get body off
Yeah I see what you mean now with diognostic kit cus of the suspension .
Bit worried that when engine out il find more thigs wrong with it but that's probably best as I can fix them just my low budget for the fix finger s crossed should be ok

hi

like u say all depends on what's needed , a decent recon engine is £5k , imagine ur looking at least a grand but very difficult to tell without taking it apart first

if u post a thread in the D3 forum u will get some very indepth knowledge , ref engine and how long it takes to remove the body , there are threads there in how to remove the body

with the body off is an ideal time to underseal and wax the chassis and check over everything whilst u can access everything so easily

trouble is at the end of the day with the damage you've also got u could spend £5k before even breaking sweat, what happens if u get the engine out and its beyond repair ,

before starting everything , maybe sitting down first and price everything up, see what the current value is all fixed up and weigh up the options if it will be viable , as it's going to be a big job but with ur experience at least u can do everything urself

it's all down to the cost of parts and ur time that u have to factor in , but certainally won't tell u how to suck eggs, lol

by the way , can't quite make it out ,may i ask what's the reg number plse , many thks

Iv sinend up and put post up my username is same as this site dimma.davies iv asked for help on parts companies
I'd say be good if I can get prices on crank shaft
Pistons, shells full engine and gasket sets
Be a good start
Reg Is MW55 SSU
Some times I need help sucking eggs lol

lol ;)

just replied to u over on the forum , thks for the reg and the mot history looks ok

ouch , didn't realise the crank had gone, now ur talking money , can't see u getting change out of £3k for the rebuild but others on the d3 forum will know better of costs

might be better buying a second hand S type jag for the engine ,but is abit of an unknown without looking at the damage done to ur engine and costs

great you've got the post ramp and will indeed make life considerably easier

imagine it's not going to be an overnight project , wonder if u will need something like an iid diagnostic to set it all up again after being apart ??
