I was surprised at how light they are......not sure why you think they are heavy.

Cheers

Because they are one of the heaviest boots in the Altberg range... for females and blokes who are required to run in boots the sneaker, tabbing, desert microlite or jungle are far better.

The MOD Defender is massed produced, all other Altbergs are hand made in Richmond.

Kindest regards

She is going to be a copper cadet, hardly a 40 mile tab. Plus if you look on the altberg website the weight difference between the models is not that great. The defender size 9 is 741 gr the cops boot is 727 gr............if you go to the sneaker it is 630 gr.( all for size 9).

Cheers

That's the weight of a dry boot... and the defender will take longer to dry out... a lot longer.

100g is a considerable amount on your feet- I'm not suggesting she would do a 40 mile tab... the police don't tend to advance to battle. However she might be required to sprint... or do a mile or so best effort... not dissimilar from an OFT2 of which the sneaker is far better suited.

Have you ever done a 40 miler?

Yours ever

Stay away from Magnum, they are crap leather and a bitch to bull. Although as a police cadet it is probably just a high polish rather than actual bulling, but a little extra pride in appearance never goes wrong.Size 6 opens the world to her but from experience I'd say go Lowa or Altberg. I've used Lowa Super Camp/SC2 for over a decade and still happy with them. If you can't afford to buy from Lowa, then army surplus or ebay grade 2 or above are fine.
Also stay well away from BCH. The mk1 was the only one any good for anything, from the mk2 they were even worse than DMS and that takes some doing. Again I speak with the voice of experience.
Good luck to her and if she eventually has trouble deciding whether to go police or RAF. It's simple, RAF get treated like royalty, you can't upset the people who deal with millions of £s worth of aircraft and we all know what the public treat police like. ;)

Addit: Just seen the bit about gloves and socks. The black army issue sock is a nightmare (much cheaper materials and quality than the old green ones) , especially for female feet, as us girlies tend to keep ours a tad softer than the guys ;) So if you're getting her socks try to avoid those, although with a thin pair under them, blisters are less likely. If she can get away with walking socks then 1000mile.co.uk is the way to go. As for gloves, I recommend riding gloves for most weather conditions. They are flexible to enough keep on and still to be able to write in a notebook, or any other fiddly type jobs and dry out quickly, whilst still fitting the smaller hand. Leather is ok for when it gets cold and miserable, so long as she has 3 pairs, a pair for wearing , a pair that's drying and a pair just in case.

All these recommendations for particular brands are fine, but fit and comfort are more important; don't buy a pair of Altbergs if they don't feel right. I'm on my second pair of £40 Karrimor black leather boots, they're very comfortable (for me) and very waterproof. I also bought a pair of Columbia boots from Go Outdoors, which are amazingly light and comfortable. The extra pair of socks idea is good, or you can buy two layer socks. And don't buy anything with steel toecaps!

Mine have never leaked and have been ankle deep in mud for several hours, and have kept my feet warm and dry, liberal coating of above mentioned ledergris has kept em that way,for the leather to dry out usually over night is enough in my experience

if i swap from the william lennons to my altbergs feel like i've got spring in my step their so light in comparison :D

as a police cadet I doubt she'll be wading off a beach landing craft so probably won't be an issue, wet grass will probably be the most wet they'll see

agree but you can get the adjuster pads cheap from altberg so if you try a new par with fitted and feel good you can then buy second hand boot and adjust accordingly with the adjusters pads

You do realise that you have just recommended particular brands

I can't speak for the others but personally I would have thought by now the OP and his/her daughter have worn enough boots or shoes to not have to be told to buy ones that fit comfortably . Perhaps, like myself, the others recommending altberg or Lowa did so because they wore them rather than cheap karrimors, as cheap karrimors were not up to the job they were doing.
As my nan always said " buy cheap, buy twice"

Addit: forgot to say in earlier post, if you do look on ebay or army surplus check if you are looking at the 'normal' boot or ladies. It does make a difference in sizing.

Aaarrrrgghhh wet grass, set off nightmares every time I had to cross it in bulled shoes or boots.

I suppose I did!

You'd be surprised though how many people buy shoes on others' recommendation or advertising, or just on price, rather than on fit & comfort.

Thanks pal, I missed the one auction, saw your post too late but they didn't sell. Had a phone call yesterday afternoon off a mate, he's got hold of some new boots off a workmate foc.
He's bringing them round tonight for my daughter to try on:).
They will do to get her through her first duty this Sunday anyway:cool:
Tango hotel alpha November kilo Sierra.;)

If she can't decide between the police or the RAF she could always become a snowdrop....that is an RAF policeman / woman. If she has any intelligence she rise rapidly as a lot of them aren't the brightest around....

Don't wish that on her  Then she would be neither a copper nor RAF ;) Barrier up , barrier down, anyone?

I was stationed on 7 different stations and have visited for work another 6. At no time did a snowdrop ever do gate duty. That was shared between every airman on the station, and on the smallest station that would mean about 1 day ( or night) every three months.
These days about half of those stations have no one on guard duty, you ring the bell on the gate and someone comes out to investigate.

Then you have not encountered the RAFP that I have ;) None of which detracts from the fact that suggesting someone become RAFP is just not nice :( Poor girl, what did she do to hurt you.

my grandad remembered the american MP ( called q tips back then ) when in RAF during the war he was in a pub in nuneaton one night when a brawl started between 3 or 4 yanks soldiers over something or other, a jeep pulled up outside with 4 huge african american MP's who then proceeded to beat the yank soldiers unconscious drag them outside, piled them up on the back of the jeep then walked back in and apologized for all the commotion with a dof of their helmets to the rest of the punters!

Forgot to update this:rolleyes:, the new boots that my mate supplied have been perfect she says.
She has done two 'duties' so far and a third as I type, policing a large fireworks display.
Last week she had driving lessons all week (on private roads as she is only 16) , we had a cop car for 2 of the days.
Highly recommend police cadets for your 16 year olds, they get to do exciting stuff for free or heavily discounted.

Whatever makes her grin ... tell her to take it easy when she gets the self defence classes and wants to show you 'stuff' ...
