Hi everyone,
Have a very stressed hubby. His beloved td4 54 plate has died.
She played up a few weeks ago when we had been stopped for couple of hours and wouldn't start again. Turned over fine just wouldn't catch. Hubby had a play, cleaned a few bits. Kept trying and suddenly fired up and has been fine.
Weekend and has done the same. Had the rac out Sunday who plugged it in and along with some other thing came up with camshaft sensor. (Common fault from what i've read)
He's changed that yesterday and still wondering fire up. He says fuel pump is working as he can hear it. It's an auto so can't even try n bump it. Any advice would be very welcome. She's quite low mileage (about 90k I think)

Thanks Flossie. He wants to have a go at it himself first. Doesn't want to let it beat him. Lol. We have a guy that we know will look at it for us but think would do the same as him...

If the fuel pump under the wheel arch is clicking, its probably lifting fuel to the engine - it would likely throw the MIL light if that failed anyway.

I'd double check which sensor is used on starting, the cam sensor may be ignored and the crank only used.

My guess is the little O Ring in the High Pressure fuel pump (on the engine) has gone. This stops the pump supplying pressurised fuel to the injectors. Its a cheap as chips fix (cheaper than a box of matches) and quite easy.... Have a search on here it has been discussed lots.

There is also a small loom/wiring harness to the injectors or fuel pressure senor on the fuel rail that is a known point for faults like this. There is a replacement upgraded part. Once again, have a search, it will be found.

Good luck.

Fabulous thank u. Have relaid that back to him. And bits u say sounds right. He's said he's bought fuel pump. He seems to think he has the upgraded fuel rail already. Tho obviously if fuel pump doesn't work he'll have to go on to the next thing. I so hope it works. Lol.

I'd be changing the high pressure fuel pump regulator O rings before the rear lift pump. It's a very common problem on the TD4. The O ring kit is only a few £ and pretty easy to fit.

How are the doors looking at the moment? Be careful if it rains to hard, apparently they have a tendency to fall off, so I'm told @Hippo

Lol are u a hard cor landy driver. I wish I was clever I would send u pics of what my son in law has done. They do winch challenges etc fab to watch.

Some might say that, I do drive a defender or 'trator' as some lightweights call them as my everydayer.

Sounds like your son in law and myself would get on well, I love it when people create there own things with landies! I'm in the middle of making a series 3 coil sprung v8 fun toy, with lots of dads help!!

Good luck with the freelander though in all seriousness you're in the right place for help and I know how frustrating it can be when tings aren't going your way! :)
