Hello

I have a series 3, from 1983. It is a 2.25 diesel with 5 main bearings and a standard gearbox.

I have a small problem with the engine, that I hope can be sorted with your help:

1: If I start up the engine (when it is cold), and then stops the engine before it get warm. Then the next time I start the engine it has a tendency to rev up, and cover the surrounding area in a thick brown-ish smoke.

2: When the engine is warm and I am driving at a speed of 75-85 km/h, it can sometimes start to clatter (right word?), and a black/dark grey smoke comes from the exhaust. When it happens, a slight loss of power is detectable. To cure it, I have to ease the pressure of the accelerator and then the noise and smoke disappeares and the engine is back to normal. If I keep the speed below 75, then there is no problem and the clatter never appeares.

3: If the clatter appeares, then the glow plug on cylinder 1 is burnt. And it is always nr. 1...

The fuel nozzle have been changed, flame disc also, I have checked the valve clearance(0.010"), I have tried to see if the valve stem(inlet and exhaust valve on nr 1) could be moved more the others on a sideways basis. I have added fuel injection treatment to see if that would help. There is no white subtans in the rocker cover.

The fuel consumption is about 10-11l/100 km.

Can anyone please help?

With regards

Johannes

PS: I am from Denmark, so please excuse me for misspelling and etc.

I wouldnt expect any more than 50 mph / 80 kph from your engine. Remember the gearing is lower than most vehicles so at 50 the engine is doing 70.
I rarely go over 65kph.
