I've got a faulty starter relay on my defender 200tdi (disco), the relay has no markings on it so not sure what type it actually is

anyone know?

200tdi doesn't have a starter relay AFAIK.
Glow plug relay?
Starter solenoid?
On the wiring diagram is says it does which is why i'm a bit confused, tried a relay that i thought may have worked and the engine started when turning the key to ignition not start

None on a 200, if you look at the back of the ign switch the starter trigger wire is huge compared to modern cars
The diagram may be referring to the starter motor solenoid which is as youve guessed a relay.
Have you checked the starter itself, checked the battery positive and negative leads?
The little trigger wire terminal, (the same fatish one from the back of the switch) can and does come loose, right bar steward to get to in situ.

My 200 has had a few starters due to being dunked to often.

This is the relay,
The starter motor works fine in and out the engine, just won't turn properly without this

Maybe take a pic of where the relay holder is and I will take one of my 93 200 to compare it to?

To temporarily bypass relay two male crimp terminals and a short piece of fat wire.

Looks totally different to mine
First pic std view, second pic of the two relays hidden behind the gold coloured bracket, 3 rd relay in there is one I fitted for the elec fan.

I'm pretty newish to land rovers so still getting my head round all the different bits.
What ever relay it is without it being fitted the startmotor solinoid won't work either,
The previous owner has done some dodgy wiring on it so trying to sort that out

Might be worth pulling the dash panel out, easy only a few screws, pop off the speedo cable with long nose pliers and take a squint at the back of the ign switch and see fi you can see the fat white wire with red tracer I think they are the correct colours and get testing from there.
