Td5 cooling problems....

I've been searching through other threads but still not found a similar issue!

I've had a problem with my Td5 (2002 110) since last winter where it would take ages for the engine to get to running temp and then if I hit traffic or stationary for a few minutes to temp would fall back to blue on the gauge and no heat from the heater (!!).

Guessed the thermostat might have something to do with it and a new one went in last week. To begin with all seamed ok. Warmed up slightly quicker (although not helped by recent cold weather), engine seemed to run slightly hotter (just off middle on gauge) and temp seems to hold in traffic.

But now, if it's up to running temp, even after a good 20 mile run, and I stop the engine for a moment (to fill up etc), the temp remains the same initially after setting off again but then drops to about 1/3 and stays there even after a good few miles driving (and cab heater cool).

What I'm struggling to understand is how the engine can hold its heat and go from full running temp to 1/3 so quickly and then take so long to warm up again?

I'm quite tempted to take the engine fan off and replace with an electric one at some point but would rather try to sort this issue first.

Water pump perhaps/air lock after changing thermostat...? Any advice would be much appreciated

Hello Tim. I know that it's a long time since you posted your question, but can you tell me if you ever got to the bottom of this issue? I have a year 2000 td5 90, which I have had for about five years.

The system has been loosing water for some time, and since I only do very few miles I just top it up regularly. I have new rad, new thermostat and two leaks in pipes that had rubbed and punctured repaired. I still have issues when towing. When the engine is under stress, the temp goes up to red, as soon as I take the foot of the gas, the temp drops down to mormal within no time at all.

The heater has not been working so it's out of the car and the system has been bypassed to keep the water coolant flowing.

I have a new coolant pump sitting in the kitchen ready to fit, but saw your thread and thought that you might be in a position to enlighten me!
