Hi all,

Just a quick question, I have a Richards Chassis for a 200TDI 90 with the extra addition of the TD5 fuel tank mounts.
So I'm wondering if anybody has also got this and has managed to connect the two tanks and run them together, if so how did you manage it and hows it working out?

Also can you fit a TD5 body on to a 200tdi chassis without having to weld on to the new galvanized chassis?

Many thanks

Regarding the tank setup, yes, lots of options.

The Aussies are good at this stuff because of the colossal mileages they are potentially faced with.

I have seen a good simple setup with another filler at the back, a second sender with a second fuel gauge and then transfer pipe work and a small transfer pump. I believe the rear tank was the main tank and the side was an aux tank which could have its fuel pumped across to the main tank via a small switch, this can also be automated.

This means in day to day running could can just keep the main tank filled and gives better range and aux tank for when you need it.

Another version is a Y valve with selectable tanks this could be easily automated too.

Another version is a link pipe which keeps both tanks filled to the same level but this is more for the twin side tanks which are identical.

Re chassis I would suspect yes because not much changed but I cannot comment reliably having never actually looks and compared the two.

Are you planning a long trip or just the challenge of getting it to function correctly

Thanks for that discomania, I like the idea of the Y valve so I'll look into it, don't suppose you remember where you saw the information by any chance?

Hello Foxy,
The challenge has started to take over rational thinking to be honest, but I also would like to do long trips as well. I bought the chassis with the additional tank mount to allow me the choice of which way I wanted to fit the body..... but as you can tell, I'm not even really sure if I can fit a TD5 body yet!!

TD5 body has the same fixings to the chassis as a 200tdi. The things you have to modify from a td5 to 200tdi are :-
Seat box cut out and handbrake fixing
Transmission tunnel and floor panels
extend fuel lines and electrical cable to rear fuel tank
adapt 200tdi down pipe to 300tdi or TD5 Exhaust

you have to remember fuel circulates back to tank from the pump and injectors so if you have to separate tanks you need a change over for the return as well, i seen a guy fit another tank and not understand why he had caused a fuel leak he was running on his spare tank whilst also filling the main tank which was already near full

That's great info Foxy, and to be fair what i also wanted to hear.... Many thanks

I will bear that in mind, quite funny story though! A lot more research is needed on how I'm going to achieve this.

One of the Aussie LR sites.

I would go for the transfer pump version because it lets you have more gauges and switches and fancy things like an Airbus!

I'd forget the two tanks, problems begin at the fuel filler stage and just get worse for no real gain. Balancing the tanks when filling is a problem, making an extra 3" hole in your rear plastic tank would be interesting , routing the filler pipes correctly should involve cutting your chassis and welding in a tube for the 3" balance pipe from rear to side tank
Balancing the two tanks when running is also problematic as which one would would get the return ?

At the moment I get over 250miles from a side tanked 200tdi and don't struggle to find a fuel station within that radius, so until fuel stations close I would stick to what Land Rover have spent a great deal of engineering time developing

Well there's a lot to think about, and only time will tell but at least I now know that both things I would like to achieve is possible. All I have to do now is weigh it up if I can justify it lol

Thanks for the advice guys, much appreciated!!!
