Discovery 1 300tdi

Fitted a digital water temperature gauge - it's got power, but it isn't wired in yet as the adapter i bought for the water pipes was the wrong size.





Got around to fitting the new header tank.



Finally had my clutch replaced, and transfer box swapped to a 1.4 ratio one.



However it appears to be leaking from where the transfer box meets the gearbox - I'm thinking it's the input seal - thoughts?

Aye, it does. oh blimey.

Only my opinion, ..... but your picture seems to show a nice clean TB and a filthy main - if they didn't clean it, then what the **** do they expect. I'm not going to say any more, cos it ain't worth it.

It's leaking, its the garages problem, take it back and make them fix it.

Yeah he's telling me that he thought it had a new seal fitted - which it didn't as I supplied a new one when I gave him the transfer box.

Best he be taking it off and replacing the seal for you because he forgot

I'm about to put 285's on mine (pretty much 33's) and I've been wondering about sourcing a defender t box. How close do you think it takes it back to standard gearing?

I used this Ashcroft calculator - http://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/calc/ratio_calc.html - for me it brings it very close to standard gearing.

I finally got round to fitting the water temp sensor for the gauge.

I bought a brass bleed screw so that I could tap a 1/8 NPT thread in it to mount the sensor.

Tools - Centre punch, 1/8 NTP tap, 8.5mm drill bit.



Punched the hole, not quite in the centre - Nevermind it isn't meant to look pretty anyway!



Hole cut and tapped with 1/8 NPT thread



Fitted the sensor into the thread with PTFE tape - wire ran from the gauge through the firewall and routed up to the sensor.



Gauge finally working - not sure how accurate it is.

The guy never got back to me regarding my transfer box leaking because of the input seal - so I decided to have a go myself. I say myself, my dad helped a lot, and let me use his workshop.



We found the issue - notice something missing? The input seal is not there.



We found it, just inside the casing - so the seal wasn't replaced, and the existing seal was knocked through into the case with the shaft from the gearbox, which explains why it was leaking so much fluid.

But, as for the muppett who you paid to do the job initially

He'd be off my christmas card list, that's for sure.

This is why I do ALL my own. I really can't be doing with picking up the pieces from other "peoples" ( using that term very very loosely ) "work"

Following sorting my transfer box I discovered that the rubber seal between the gearbox/outside world and me had a hole in it. Also, my diff lock switch was broken.

Replacement diff lock switch fitted -





New rubber seal - I was surprised that it was a genuine Land Rover part for £15 quid.





Old seal removed and metal work all cleaned up - It was pretty filthy under there.





New seal fitted and riveted in - I have also fitted my extension to the transfer box lever here, following the 2" lift.





Transfer box lever is now a better height, but quite close to the gear lever - I might have to bend it back a tad.



I recently purchased the component for a CB radio setup - I forgot to take a picture of all of the parts.

It is never nice drilling a hole in body panels that can't be replaced, like the roof...

13mm hole for the aerial mount



Cleaned the paint off the inside of the hole, as the aerial requires grounding



Base of the mount fitted - I put a little bit of sealant on the rubber seal supplied to make sure it was water tight.



Obviously if I put an aerial in that mount it would not be facing in an upward direction, so I also purchased an elbow joint.



and a quick release connector - as I won't have the aerial on all of the time

Aerial fitted - I went for the 1.5m one, as it is easily removable with the quick release



I haven't wired in or mounted the cb radio yet, but I was thinking I would mount it here

Couple more bits today.

I bought this little 100mm x 100mm x 10mm piece of steel to make some heavy duty rear bumper spacers - As the ones I bought were very thin and just bent.

So I cut this piece of steel in half and smoothed the edges



Drilled some holes



and used as spacers for the rear bumper



In the end I actually used these bolts to secure the spacers to the chassis



and these to secure the bumper to the spacer





I didn't take a photo of the bumper mounted, but it looks the same as before - but now it doesn't shake around and make annoying noises.

I also fitted my CB radio - I wanted it mounted just above the transfer box lever.

Since my cup holders broke many months ago, I decided to mount the bracket for the CB radio to the insert that usually houses the cup holders. I forgot to take photos at this point.

When I went to mount the radio, the aerial cable hit the back of the centre console - so I cut a little hole to get around this.





Finally, the radio mounted - and I can still get the transfer box in to low

Did a spot of greenlaning today - within the first couple of miles I realised I had made a mistake with the placement of my aerial.

I took off the stinger piece of the aerial, and shortly after a tree ripped off the mount.



I also lost a wing mirror (again)



So I've decided to relocate the aerial to the front bumper

It will be located here once the new mount arrives



Also after actually using it, I've mounted the cb transceiver here

Bit of a boring update, but an update nonetheless.

Ages ago (almost a year!) I took out my passenger seat and cleaned it up and painted it, as well as the floor. I have finally got round to doing the drivers side.

My gearbox tunnels get very hot which isn't comfortable on a hot day. So I lined the gearbox tunnel with some cheapy insulation



I cleaned up the rust and painted the floor

I cleaned up the rust in the rear too and just painted those sections





The paint on my boot floor has been flaking off from the abuse, so touched that up too.





I also started putting some insulation on the roof, to try and keep the heat out best I can when it's hot.
