I've had this rumble noise from the rear of my 2wd L series Freelander. I'd been getting more and more worried, thinking diff or wheel bearing. I thought I'd just try swapping the tyres back to front as I remember my dads old cortina having a dodgy tyre once back in the 70's and there being quite a rumble. So, swapped them over and now the rumble is now at the front. It starts as soon as the car is moving and above about 25-30 gets quite noticable. So, my question is , is it just what to expect with some tyres or is there something wrong with the wheels or tyres. The noisy one's are well worn Goodyear Wranglers ( 216 65 16 ). The quiet tyres are newer cheap Horizon ( van? ) tyres. Cheers.

Yup, I reckon they don't need balancing cause theirs no wobble from the steering wheel which funnily enough I do get with the quiet tyres on the front. I'll fire the spare on the front and see what difference that makes, it's a brand new Insa Turbo ranger.

You know that swapping the tyres rear to front WILL trash the 4X4 system.
The Freelander 1 MUST have 4 identical tyres, the least worn on the rear.

Your noisy rear tyres are a sign that the VCU is stiff and distorting the tyre carcass.

I suggest you replace your VCU, and swap the tyres back to least worn on the back immediately. If the rear tyres are noisy, swap them side to side. NOT rear to front.
Also NEVER mix tyres on the FL1. All tyres MUST be the same. Same make, type and size, with least worn on the rear.
