Evening all,

I've just purchased a 2007 Discovery 3 to use as a work vehicle. I spend quite a bit of time driving to jobs so would like to install DAB.
Can I keep the original head unit and add something behind the scenes to provide the DAB bit? I'd also like to get the Nav maps as up to date as possible - is that a question of installing a new CD? or is it more complex than that?

Any advice, links, info would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Ben

There are a number of DAB adapters available to those who don't want to change their existing radio head unit.
I know it's a Disco 2, but this is how I've done it in mine:

These days they are quite a bit smaller and even easier to install with wireless controls and bluetooth for connecting the phone or .mp3 player.
Do a google type search for "Pure DAB" or "Alpine DAB"
The best type of connection into your current system is a "loop through" aerial connection.
As for your sat-nav issue, dunno, I haven't got beyond the school atlas!

Thanks very much Brian,
I've fitted that style unit in the past so know it well.
What I'm considering this time is something hidden behind the dash, that receives DAB and is controlled through the existing head unit.

But that's not something I've done before...

I think you will find the latest disc you can get for a d3 is 2012 and tbh the system is pants and an utter arse to set up, what takes 20 seconds on a tom tom takes forever on the D3.
I bought a copy disc and it would keep losing where it was on the planet (could be fine for days or weeks then bang its gone again) and was so much hard work getting it right I gave up and stuck the original one back in, I think I still have it so if you pm me your address I will post it to you foc.

The most important thing you need to find out is has the car had the updated oil pump fitted? if not get is done asap as it will bite you in the arse and you will need a new engine, 2007 is the first year it became a major issue, the oily side of the pump is not an issue at all its the fact the cambelt tensioner is bolted to the pump and where it bolts on is weak and cracks fails and everything inside the engine hits each other and its game over.

Hi Lynall,
Thanks for the info.
I agree that the satnav is rubbish, same as the Freelander we have which takes much longer than a Tom Tom. I'll see how out of date the installed version is but then may be in touch.
I'll have a look at the oil pump once I've collected it.

welcome , to the asylum

would be great to see pics when u get it, plse

as @lynall mentioned, ref the oil pump

this is what happens to them when they break

Theres a bit of stripping down to see the pump, but if you are not sure when you get down to it there will be a date code cast into it and if you google you will see the later type with stronger webbing, it really is a serious issue, I reckon theres probably a post a week (on the D3/4 forum) about engine failure which with the amount of D3 out there isnt the end of the world but if the oil pumps were all done when the belts were done more than half of them engine blow ups wouldnt have happened.
The other major problem is spun crank bearings but thats rarer, oil changes every 5k are well worth doing, again google as you have to fit the oil filter correctly because if you dont yes youve guessed it you wreck the engine!

Oil pump date casting pic, dead chuffed when I saw it was 2012 saved me a job.
